Football is seen as a religion to some, so it is only fitting that stadiums around the world are regarded as cathedrals of the beautiful game.

But times they are a changin’ and a new era of venues is upon us.

Victorian-style obstructed views and traditional layouts are becoming a dying breed. The new builds popping up are sophisticated projects being labelled architectural wonders in their own right.

Of course, these venues don’t come cheap. But plenty of football clubs are not short of a quid or two. They are becoming increasingly ambitious with their grounds now they are armed with the knowledge that a state-of-the-art venue does not only attract new players but also fans, sponsors and significant matchday revenue.

Tottenham’s new home has drawn envious glances of late but, given the scale of future projects in the pipeline elsewhere, it is not likely to be the stadium on everybody’s lips for too long.

The Camp Nou and Bernabeu are both set for major revamps as Barcelona and Real Madrid look to make a statement on the world stage while Inter and AC Milan are starting all over again at the San Siro.

Roma will also soon be on the move as they prepare to say farewell to the Stadio Olimpico, which means their meetings with Lazio in the ‘Derby della Capitale’ won’t ever be the same.

Closer to home, there could soon be a new sight to rival the Shard on the south London skyline as Crystal Palace have unveiled plans to redevelop Selhurst Park.

Liverpool are in the process of expanding the capacity of Anfield but Everton have decided to up sticks and head to Bramley-Moore Dock in an effort to finally bridge the gap between themselves and the Premier League elite.

Even fans of Valencia may finally have a new stadium to call their own as work on the Nou Mestalla, which originally began all the way back in 2007, has started to gather pace.

Take note, as some of this lot are going to be on your football stadium bucket list before you know it.
