The 2019 Ballon d’Or ‘shortlist’ has been revealed and who will win this year’s prestigious award is anybody’s guess.
The usual suspects Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are in the running – as always. But this year they will have to get past some stellar names, including Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, to take the top prize.
Even beyond those three, this is a list stacked with absolutely world-class talent which, at face value, looks very difficult to separate.
However, that is exactly what must happen if we’re going to get a winner. So, to try and get an idea of exactly who is among the favourites – and who is already out of the running – we’ve taken up the task of ranking every single candidate on this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist.
A total of seven Liverpool players are in the running, while Manchester City are also well represented after securing the Premier League title with a total of 98 points. Nobody can really argue with the inclusion of players who ply their trade at Anfield and the Etihad but what about PSG midfielder Marquinhos? Well, unusual choices have become part and parcel of the annual awards.
Which players are dark horses? Could we have another surprise choice like Luka Modric? Who has been included on the list simply to make up the numbers? And who has the greatest chance of knocking the ‘big two’ off their perch?
