Farense welcome Primeira Liga title chasers Benfica to Estádio de São Luís on Sunday evening (8:15pm, UK time).

Both are in desperate need of all three points as the hosts currently hover above the relegation zone while their visitors can ill afford to lose further ground in the title race.

Farense vs Benfica build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Given how close things are in Portugal’s top division, especially at the bottom, it takes only one win for a club to change their fortunes around. Farense, who come into this game with just one win their last six, only sit outside the relegation zone due to a superior goal difference. That being said, they’re several points from holding down a mid-table berth, Jorge Costa’s side will need to end a three-game winless streak at home if they want to start looking up. Their only wins in Faro this season have come against fellow relegation-threatened sides Boavista (3-1), Marítimo (2-1) and Gil Vicente (3-1).

One win in six games has derailed Benfica’s championship push. This poor recent form coupled with Sporting winning five on the bounce, including against the Eagles, has left Jorge Jesus’ men 11 points behind their city rivals. It’s a contrast from how they were performing in late November through December and consequently, Braga have leapfrogged them and Paços de Ferreira are not that far behind, either. Away from home, they’re currently on a four-game winless streak with just one defeat suffered during that period, which came against the runaway leaders.

  • Farense (vs Vitória Guimarães): Defendi; Alex Pinto*, Pinto, Mancha, Abner; Lucca, Oudrhiri; Mansilla, Gauld, Queta; Henrique.
  • Benfica (vs Arsenal): Leite; Veríssimo, Vertonghen, Otamendi; Gonçalves, Taarabt, Pizzi, Weigl, Grimaldo; Waldschmidt, Núñez.

Fabio Nunes and Alex Pinto are both suspended for Farense this weekend. Benfica are only missing Jardel and Andre Almeida from their matchday squad.

Player to watch: Haris Seferovic (Benfica)

Having gone five games without scoring, Haris Seferovic ended a 388-minute goal drought against Moreirense last time out, bringing him to eight strikes for the season and making him Benfica’s leading marksman. A lot remains expected of the Swiss marksman, who netted six of those aforementioned league goals in the Eagles’ opening seven matches. Registering in consecutive matches has been rare with Seferovic managing that feat just once. Can he score in back-to-back games against Farense, or will he fire a blank once more?
