FPL wildcard tips: Complete fantasy football squad for Gameweek 8
Could this be your weekend that you use your wildcard? We’re sure you aren’t alone so we’ve been studying the numbers so read on for our best tips ahead of Gameweek 8.
We spent all summer creating Squawka Score, our fantasy football ranking system, which gives each player a percentage score and is designed to help you identify the gems set to propel themselves onto the FPL main stage. And now after the first few weeks of the season we’ve been given some ideas as to how the campaign could play out.

You can also find a full breakdown of what Squawka Score is, and how it works, via this link.
We’ve used Squawka Score to pick our squad for Gameweek 8, which has a few interesting fixtures. While we’re not expecting you to fully change your team, unless you’re an early Wildcard user, we’ve assembled a 15-man squad (within a budget of £100m) with players you should be considering — taking into account value, points, performances and fixtures — when looking at early transfers.
Gameweek 8 picks
Alisson, Liverpool
FPL price: 5.5m
Squawka Score: 59%
The Liverpool keeper has quietly gone about his business this season, picking up 27 FPL points so far. A string of ‘easy’ fixtures (according to the FDR rankings, at least) could prove to be very profitable for Alisson.
Matty Cash, Aston Villa
FPL price: 4.9m
Squawka Score: 64%
Cash has been one of the most consistent defensive performers this season, ranking as the seventh highest player in terms of average points per game. The FDR has Aston Villa facing some ‘easy’ fixtures in the next five weeks and there could be plenty of points on offer for Cash.
Joachim Andersen, Crystal Palace
FPL price: 4.7m
Squawka Score: 65%
45 FPL points have Andersen ranked as the number one defender when it comes to average points per match. Two goals have helped his cause but Crystal Palace have also kept three clean sheets, meaning Andersen is one of the most sought after defenders in the game, at present.
Lucas Digne, Aston Villa
FPL price: 4.6m
Squawka Score: 50%
We’re putting a few eggs in the Aston Villa basket this week. Digne hasn’t quite matched Cash’s output but he’s still scored well, netting 26 FPL points so far. Some favourable fixtures could bring clean sheet points but Digne has also been influential at the other end of the pitch too, with the Frenchman grabbing three assists, so far.
Son Heung-Min, Spurs
FPL price: 9.1m
Squawka Score: 71%
Son is currently ranked as the second highest scoring midfielder when it comes to average points per match, much of that owing to the six goals he’s scored in his last four games. In the wake of Harry Kane leaving, Son had taken over the mantle as Spurs main goal threat and should be a automatic wildcard pick.
Jarrod Bowen, West Ham
FPL price: 7.3m
Squawka Score: 50%
Bowen shows no signs of slowing down this season, scoring five goals already, including four in his last five. He’s been the main man for West Ham so far this season and could be a wise investment moving forward.
Mo Salah, Liverpool
FPL price: 12.5m
Squawka Score: 82%
Salah have continued where he left off, contributing with three goals and four assists so far this season. Averaging over six points a match, Salah is still one of the best players to have in your squad and, with no Haaland this week, you’ll be able to spend your big chunk of change on the Egyptian king.
James Maddison, Spurs
FPL price: 7.8m
Squawka Score: 81%
Maddison has taken to life in North London like a duck to water, scoring 41 FPL points since his switch from Leicester. Two goals and four assists have given the England midfielder a place in the top ten scoring midfielders so far this season and, with some very good fixtures coming up, there could be plenty more to come.

Julian Alvarez, Man City
FPL price: 6.9m
Squawka Score: 80%
The third highest scoring striker in FPL this season, Alvarez has proved he’s more than just a back up to Erling Haaland. Three goals and give assists have given the Argentinian forward 46 FPL points of far this season and, if he continues to contribute at the same level, he should be one of the first names on your wildcard list.
Darwin Nunez, Liverpool
FPL price: 7.4m
Squawka Score: 77%
It feels as though Nunez has struggled to nail down a place in the Liverpool starting lineup and it’s easy to see why, with the striker failing to play 90 minutes so far this season. Despite this, he’s still the ninth highest scoring forward in FPL, with three goals and two assists to his name. Liverpool have some tasty looking fixtures coming up, which could benefit Nunez.
Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa
FPL price: 8.0m
Squawka Score: 64%
The highest scoring forward in FPL following his incredible haul last weekend, Watkins comes into a really favourable run of fixtures. Four goals and six assists has shown that Watkins can be a key player in any FPL team this season.
Bernd Leno, Fulham
FPL price: 4.7m
Squawka Score: 63%
Kyle Walker, Man City
FPL price: 5.3m
Squawka Score: 59%
Pedro Porro, Spurs
FPL price: 5.0m
Squawka Score: 63%
James Ward-Prowse, West Ham
FPL price: 6.3m
Squawka Score: 61%
