FPL wildcard tips: Gameweek 5 complete fantasy football squad
The return of FPL brings the first proper opportunity to use your wildcard. We’ve been studying the numbers so read on for our best tips ahead of Gameweek 5.
We spent all summer creating Squawka Score, our fantasy football ranking system, which gives each player a percentage score and is designed to help you identify the gems set to propel themselves onto the FPL main stage. And now after the first few weeks of the season we’ve been given some ideas as to how the campaign could play out.
Fancy your chances against our Squawka Score super computer? We’re challenging you to beat us in our own mini-league. You can sign up here or use the league code 8ju9vx to join the Squawka Challenge League.
You can also find a full breakdown of what Squawka Score is, and how it works, via this link.
We’ve used Squawka Score to pick our squad for Gameweek 5, which has a few interesting fixtures. While we’re not expecting you to fully change your team, unless you’re an early Wildcard user, we’ve assembled a 15-man squad (within a budget of £100m) with players you should be considering — taking into account value, points, performances and fixtures — when looking at early transfers.
Gameweek 5 picks
Emiliano Martinez, Aston Villa
FPL price: 4.9m
Squawka Score: 53%
Martinez is one of the only goalkeepers to hit double points in FPL so far this season and, with an ‘easy’ fixture against Crystal Palace this week, could add to that total. An impressive 11 saves in four matches have given Martinez a good bulk of his points, proving his worth in FPL teams once again.
Malo Gusto, Chelsea
FPL price: 4.2m
Squawka Score: N/A
There would’t have been many that had Gusto in their FPL team at the beginning of the season, but an injury to Reece James has resulted in the Frenchman being one of the most transferred in players this season. 18 points in four games, only three of which he’s started, are some impressive numbers for a low-priced defender.
William Saliba, Arsenal
FPL price: 5.2m
Squawka Score: 32%
Much has been made of Arsenal’s defensive shape so far this season, but one constant has been Saliba. The centre back has averaged four points a game so far, ranking him within the top 25 defenders so far and, with two ‘easy’ fixtures in the next three weeks, this could be the time to move for the Arsenal centre back.
Destiny Udogie, Spurs
FPL price: 4.7m
Squawka Score: N/A
Has any other player adapted to Ange-ball quite as impressively as Udogie? 23 points from four games, two assists and two clean sheets have seen the Italian full back become one of the most sought after assets in FPL this season. A match against Sheffield United could give him another chance to score big points this week.
James Maddison, Spurs
FPL price: 7.7m
Squawka Score: 69%
Well, maybe Maddison pushes Udogie all the way in the Ange-ball stakes. Maddison made a big money move to North London this summer and became an instant hit. Averaging over seven points a game, Maddison has benefitted from two goals, two assists and two clean sheets so far. If he can keep this form going, he’s a sho0-in for your midfield.
Bukayo Saka, Arsenal
FPL price: 8.6m
Squawka Score: 76%
There’s certainly a wealth of talent for England in midfield, none more so than Arsenal’s own Starboy. Saka has shown no signs of slowing down, picking up 25 points so far this season, getting his name on the scoresheet twice and providing an assist last time out, against Man United.
Son Heung-Min, Spurs
FPL price: 9.1m
Squawka Score: 62%
Before the international break, Son showed why cashing in on Harry Kane might not have been the worst business — scoring a hat-trick and picking up 20 FPL points in the process. The South Korean is proving to be the main main at Spurs this season and Sheffield United could be put to the sword this weekend.
Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool
FPL price: 7.0m
Squawka Score: N/A
The young Hungarian has certainly taken to the Premier League, following his switch from RB Leipzig. A goal, an assist and a clean sheet have all contributed to 19 FPL points so far and you get the feeling he’s just getting started. A couple of ‘easy’ fixtures for Liverpool could leads to more Szoboszlai hauls in the next couple of weeks.
Gabriel Jesus, Arsenal
FPL price: 7.9m
Squawka Score: 70%
Jesus has come back into the Arsenal starting XI and proven why he’s one of the top strikers in the country. A six-point haul against Man United in just 14 minutes had the Emirates Stadium singing his name and, with a hapless looking Everton side up next, his name could be ringing around the terraces once more.

Erling Haaland, Man City
FPL price: 14.1m
Squawka Score: 76%
Is there much to be said about Haaland that hasn’t been said before? Six goals in four games has led to 39 points so far and it doesn’t even feel like he, or Man City, have broken sweat yet. If you don’t have him, you’ll end up regretting it.
Ollie Watkins, Aston Villa
FPL price: 8m
Squawka Score: 62%
A 17-point haul without finding the net is an impressive tally and it’s surely only a matter of time before the goals flow. Watkins has provided three assists for his Villa team-mates so far this season but once he opens his account for the season, the floodgates could open for the man that scored 15 times last season.
Matt Turner, Nottingham Forest
FPL price: 4.0m
Squawka Score: N/A
Nathan Ake, Man City
FPL price: 5.1m
Squawka Score: 58%
Joachim Andersen, Crystal Palace
FPL price: 4.6m
Squawka Score: 53%
Mateo Kovacic, Man City
FPL price: 4.9m
Squawka Score: 35%
Every week we’ll give you a full squad we recommend for that specific Gameweek, but it’s not feasible changing all 15 players on a regular basis if you want to stay competitive. These will merely be our favourite 15 picks within a 100M budget for that Gameweek, for if you’re considering using your Wildcard, or want to overhaul your squad at a cost.
