FPL best midfielder picks: Is there a new English superstar about to break out?
Midfielders could hold the key to FPL success this weekend. We’ve crunched the numbers to identify the best picks ahead of Gameweek 7.
Among the higher point-scorers in FPL are the players who pull the strings from the middle of the park, whether they excel in making or scoring goals.
Our FPL rating system — Squawka Score — has been engineered to identify the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, judging a player’s output per 90 minutes for a group of specifically selected stats.

Gordon to step up for Rashford’s crown
Every week, we will bring you a Differential Duel to highlight a player who both ranks well according to our Squawka Score system and isn’t being picked by the vast majority of FPL managers.
We will then crunch the numbers and pit the chosen differential against a comparable asset who is proving popular — it is then on you to choose your fighter.
This week, we’ll be comparing England star, Marcus Rashford (30.8%) and the man who won player of the tournament at England U21’s successful Euro 2023 campaign, Anthony Gordon.
Rashford was one of the leading FPL players last season, with his incredible scoring run in the new year putting him in a league of his own. It hasn’t happened for the Man United forward this season, although he still has a whopping 30% of players backing him.
Much was made of Gordon’s big money move to Newcastle but he’s starting to live up to the hype, scoring 32 FPL point so far, eight more than Rashford. Not only that but the Newcastle winger costs a mammoth 3.3m less.
A cost effective move but possibly one that could also pay dividends in points?
Here’s how their 2022/23 stats compare on our Comparison Matrix.
