After a frantic round of midweek action, gameweek 21 is just around the corner with some big decisions awaiting FPL managers.

This week’s deadline looms large at 11am on Saturday January 30 – here Squawka considers some of the options ahead as far as captains are concerned.

Son the solution after Kane blow?

News that Harry Kane could miss several weeks of action after injuring both ankles in Thursday’s defeat to Liverpool will have rocked many FPL managers who were thinking of giving him the armband with Tottenham away to Brighton on Sunday.

His absence could shift much of the goal scoring responsibility onto his partner in crime Son Heung-min, who is the third most productive player in FPL this season, two points behind leader Kane.

The South Korean has had just one double-digit gameweek in his last eight but has created the most chances for Spurs this season (34), possesses the best shooting accuracy (55.56 per cent) and the most big chances scored (9).

Sky Bet odds: Son to score and Tottenham to win: 23/10

Captain Dominic Calvert Lewin?

Could now be the time to reinstate Dominic Calvert-Lewin? With Everton at home to Newcastle on Saturday, it could be the perfect opportunity to improve upon his haul of 11 league goals this term.

After a recent hamstring injury, he was back to lead the Toffees line against Leicester and while he endured a frustrating evening at Goodison where he had the fewest touches of any Toffees player, more minutes under his belt surely bodes well.

Calvert-Lewin is without a goal since gameweek 11 and is now owned by less than 30 per cent of managers so could prove to be a key differential if he can trouble a Newcastle side that have one clean sheet in their last 12.

Sky Bet odds: Calver-Lewin to score a brace: 9/2

Manchester City options

As it has tended to be the case in recent weeks, the best value may be in looking to Manchester City for your skipper.

Ilkay Gundogan has been invaluable this term, registering another two goals against West Brom midweek to lift him to 80 points this season – City’s third highest total and more than Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus. With Kevin de Bruyne sidelined, he represents perhaps City’s most reliable option for the armband right now with consistent returns across his last eight gameweeks.

A hat-trick of a goal, an assist and a clean sheet against West Brom saw Joao Cancelo pick up 17 points during gameweek 20 and is still selected by just 16.4 percent of FPL bosses.

Only De Bruyne has created more chances than the Portuguese this season (30) and against bottom side Sheffield United, the attacking returns could continue to pour in.

Sky Bet odds: Gundogan to score a brace: 6/1

Another chance for James Maddison to shine?

Leicester City remain without Jamie Vardy for the visit of Leeds United on Sunday but James Maddison could be another option for the armband from your Foxes contingent.

After returns of 10, 9 and 8 against Newcastle, Southampton and Chelsea respectively, the attacking midfielder endured a more frustrating evening against Everton midweek. But against Leeds, who have conceded the second most shots inside the box this season, he could profit again.

Sky Bet odds: Maddison to score from outside the area: 7/1
