It was a fascinating battle at the San Siro last week as Inter ran out 1-0 victors over Barcelona. It may have been a low-scoring affair, but it was not without it’s fair share of drama, with Barcelona feeling aggrieved about a last-minute penalty decision that went in Inter’s favour. Xavi will now be determined to exact revenge in Catalonia.
The current landscape in this season’s so-called ‘Group of Death’, which also contains Bayern Munich, sees the Bavarians currently lead the charge with a perfect record after three games. Inter sit in second owing to last week’s win over Barca, while the Catalan club come behind in third, ahead of the group’s punching bag club Viktoria Plzen, who are pointless.
Assuming Bayern beat Viktoria Plzen this week, then Barcelona know just how important this game is as they will then be unable to catch the German champions in firth. It is likely that this showdown at the Camp Nou will go a long way to determining who seals that coveted second-placed position and, ultimately, a spot in the last-16.
Barcelona v Inter Milan: Match Stats
Quite incredibly, Robert Lewandowski has been directly involved in 27 goals across his previous 15 home games in the Champions League (22 goals and five assists). That includes a hat-trick on his Barca debut in the competition against Viktoria Plzen. In fact, only two players have ever scored a hat-trick in consecutive home appearances in the Champions League: Lionel Messi in October 2016 and Cristiano Ronaldo in May 2017. He couldn’t, could he?
What is interesting, is that Inter triumphed over Barcelona last week despite only attempting five shots and having just 28% possession. Perhaps even more incredibly, the Italian club’s expected goals total of 0.18 was the lowest of any team to have won a match in the Champions League this season. Xavi is unlikely to let them off so lightly this week if they reproduce similar numbers.
Barcelona v Inter Milan: Team news
Ronald Araujo, Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen are all currently sidelined for Barca, giving Xavi a major centre-back headache. Gerard Pique and Eric Garcia are most likely going to start, but experimental centre-half Marcos Alonso could also slot in having kept a clean sheet against Celta Vigo on Sunday. Memphis Depay, Hector Bellerin and Franck Kessie are also out of action. Simone Inzaghi remains without Romelu Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic, while Joaquin Correa is also unavailable, so Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez are set to lead the line.
