Famalicao vs Porto build-up & previous line-ups:

It was a place in mid-table where Famalicao ultimately landed after winning just three of their opening 19 matches last season. Accumulating seven wins across their final 15 matches, which included a change in management, saw them claim ninth spot but six points above the dropzone. The onus is now pushing on and thus avoiding what could potentially be another intense relegation scrap. Ivo Vieira’s men started this new campaign on the wrong foot when they suffered a 2-0 loss at Paços Ferreira and it’s looking to be a tall order for them registering a second ever league win over Porto.

Close, but no cigar for Porto last season. Sérgio Conceição’s then defending champions saw their crown go to Sporting as they finished second and five points behind the new Portuguese kings. It wasn’t a bad campaign as they won 24 of their 34 league matches while losing on two occasions. The Dragons also boasted the Primeira Liga’s best attack (74 goals scored) and third best defence (59 goals conceded) behind the aforementioned Lions (20) and Benfica (27). Their quest to regain top spot started well as they ran out 2-0 winners against Belenenses on the opening weekend.

Player to watch: Sérgio Oliveira (Porto)

Though his side fell at the final hurdle it was still a season to remember for Porto midfielder Sérgio Oliveira who ended his 2020/21 league campaign having registered 13 goals and six assists. In both metrics these were his best numbers historically at the Dragons and elsewhere. In fact across Oliveira’s previous seven top-flight seasons, whilst also representing PAOK and Nantes as well respectively, he’d bag the same amount of goals while only creating three more. He wasn’t on hand in Porto’s opener against Belenenses, playing just 62 minutes, that being said Oliveira will be looking to get his account up and running against Famalicao whom he’s only netted once past in three prior league meetings.
