A year ago Daniil Medvedev broke through at Roland Garros when he reached the quarter-finals. His previous four appearances saw him eliminated each time in the first round. However there isn’t much expectation placed on the Russian given his aversion to clay court tennis and lack of playing time in recent weeks. A few weeks ago the world number two underwent a hernia operation and has since played one match on this surface, a straight sets defeat to Richard Gasquet in Geneva last week.
Much like Medvedev there’s a fitness question hanging over Facundo Bagnis who has been underpermining at the Challenger events in recent weeks. He was even forced to retire in his opening round match in Geneva a week ago. That being said, the number 103 ranked player has never failed to escape the French Open first round, though on each occasion he’d be eliminated in the following round. This will be his fourth tournament appearance and first-ever meeting with Medvedev.
