Liverpool vs Cardiff Predictions
Liverpool are among the favourites to lift the FA Cup this season and they may look to take the competition more seriously than they have in previous years with the Premier League starting to look out of reach thanks to the relentless form of Manchester City.
The Reds have already reached one domestic cup final in the EFL Cup this year and they progressed from Round Three past League One Shrewsbury despite going behind in the early stages. Jurgen Klopp’s men have now gone 25 matches at Anfield in all competitions since tasting defeat in a run that stretches back to March 2021.
Cardiff City will perhaps be viewing this season as a transitional one. After Mick McCarthy left the club following a poor run of form earlier in the season, former Welsh international Steve Morison was promoted from the U23’s into the top job and he’s coped fairly well with the step up so far, winning six, losing six and drawing three of his first 15 games in charge.
The Bluebirds face a tough test on Merseyside this weekend, but after back-to-back league victories over Nottingham Forest and Barnsley, they can at least take some confidence on the road with them. They’ve lost their last six meetings with the Reds however, with their last win at Anfield coming way back in 1959.
Beware of flying objects at Anfield on Sunday. Liverpool have scored more headed goals than any Premier League team this season with nine, while more than 60% of Cardiff’s Championship goals this season have come via headers. We’re backing the first goal to be a header at 5/1 with Sky Bet.
Liverpool are just too strong at home to back anything other than a home victory here, but recent games haven’t been too high-scoring with fewer than four goals in three of their last four games. What’s more, they’re without both Mo Salah and Sadio Mane in this game as they will both be featuring in the AFCON Final later that day, so it could be narrower victory with fewer goals than may otherwise be expected.
