Everton v Liverpool build-up, previous line-ups & pre-match team news:

The hosts have made a blistering start to the new campaign under Carlo Ancelotti, winning all four of their opening matches, with summer signings Allan, James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure all making an immediate impact.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Liverpool have been mulling over the 7-2 loss to Aston Villa for nearly two weeks now, and approach this game with their neighbours starting the day of a Merseyside derby top of the table for the first time since 1989.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to maintain his unbeaten record against Everton and continue the club’s 10-year wait for a win over Liverpool, but this is a Toffees side far superior to anything the Premier League has seen over the past decade. The ingredients for a classic are all there.

  • Everton (vs Brighton): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Mina, Digne; Doucoure, Davies, Sigurdsson; Rodriguez, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison.
  • Liverpool (vs Aston Villa): Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita*, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Jota.

Everton have had a good week with regards to injuries, welcoming back Yerry Mina and Seamus Coleman, both of whom were minor doubts for the derby. Allan is fully fit having missed the Brighton game with a knock picked up in the League Cup win over West Ham at the end of last month. Andre Gomes is also available having sat out the previous match.

Liverpool welcome back Thiago Alcantara and Sadio Mane for this match, but will continue to be without Alisson, meaning Adrian is likely to retain his place in goal, despite letting in seven against Villa last time out. Naby Keita is also out, with Thiago tipped to start in his place.

Players to watch:

Everton: This match represents Everton’s best chance to end their barren run of 22 games without a win over Liverpool, and were they to break that decade-long duck, then summer recruit James Rodriguez will need to continue showcasing his world class exploits. The former Real Madrid playmaker has had a transformative effect on the Toffees, bringing a creativity and panache that has been sorely lacking for years. With three goals and two assists in four games, the Colombian is proving both a clinical cog and a selfless forward. Liverpool will need to tighten up from the Villa Park debacle, or Rodriguez could have a field day.

Liverpool: Rodriguez may be proving an early success story for Everton, but for Liverpool they have had a player who has consistently delivered for some years now, and he is nearing a historic milestone. Mohamed Salah, the consummate forward in Liverpool’s insatiable three-pronged attack, is closing in on 100 goals for the club. As it stands the Egyptian has racked up 99, and he will be desperate to mark a century in red against the club’s closest rivals. If you are going to etch your name in goalscoring folklore, you may as well do it in style.

Scoreline prediction: Everton 2-2 Liverpool
