Anthony Gordon likened to Foden and Mount as Everton sink “joke” Man United at Goodison Park

Everton manager Frank Lampard has named Anthony Gordon among some of the best young English talent, comparing the midfielder to Mason Mount and Phil Foden.

The Toffees went into the game in terrible form, with just two wins from 10 Premier League games since Lampard took charge at the start of February, moving dangerously close to the relegation zone.

In midweek, they gave up a half-time lead to lose 3-2 to fellow relegation-battlers Burnley, leaving them just one point clear of the bottom three and a 49.65% chance of being relegated, acccording to Opta’s season predictions model.

But that decreased to 36.63% at full-time as Gordon scored the only goal of the game at Goodison Park, lifting the fans and Lampard.

In reality it wasn’t a good game, between two sides who are not in form or confidence, really needing results to achieve their respective goals. Man Utd still had a spot in the Premier League’s top four in their sights but they have surely gone now, with just a 1.48% chance. As things stand, the Europa Conference League appears most likely, a big fall from grace for the three-time European champions.

Having over two-thirds of the possession, Man Utd managed just 12 shots with four hitting the target, but all were well-met by Jordan Pickford – who looked more like England’s Jordan Pickford and Everton’s Jordon Pickford on Saturday afternoon.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba all underwhelmed for the visitors and a lot of the post-match fall out will focus on Man Utd’s troubles – as Gary Neville branded his former side a joke on Twitter.

Referring also to comments made by Dyche after Burnley’s midweek win over Everton, he said: “United a joke. Well done to Everton. Would have also been hard for Frank Lampard to hear Sean Dyche say what he said so well done to him. Some response.”

But that shouldn’t take away from Everton’s big win and particularly the performance of Gordon, who Lampard compared to the likes of Mason Mount and Phil Foden.

“He’s a top young player with a great attitude, a great hunger,” Lampard told BT Sport after the game.

“He loves the club, he loves coming to training every day, he loves the idea of scoring goals and making assists and he’s on himself if he doesn’t do that he wants more, which is brilliant to see in a young player.

“It’s the difference for the great batch of young players that we have in this country. Of Mason Mount, because I’ve worked with him, you look at Foden from outside, they have this extra attitude that makes them what they are. And Anthony’s one of those.”

During Lampard’s spell as Derby and Chelsea manager, the former England midfielder built up a close relationship with Mount, making him a key member of his sides. Lampard’s reliance on Mount often brought criticism and questions of favouritism, with some fans going as far as dubbing Mount Lampard’s “son”.

But Mount has since silenced his doubters and Gordon will hope to join the Chelsea midfielder and Foden in England squads to come. He’s certainly made a good start, scoring his fourth goal for Everton against Man Utd, all of which have come at Goodison Park.
