Everton v Boreham Wood predicted XIs: Team news as Lampard responds to PGMOL apology
Everton will be looking to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the second consecutive season when they host non-league side Boreham Wood on Thursday at 8:15pm (UK time).
The Toffees went through a period of FA Cup misery between 2016 and 2020, knocked out in the third round three times and only making it as far as the fourth in 2018/19. However, the past two seasons have seen them grow once again in the FA Cup and they could hit back-to-back quarter-finals for the first time since 2014 when they did it in three consecutive seasons. But they are up against the neutral’s team this season, non-league Boreham Wood who will be looking to claim their biggest scalp after knocking out AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth in the past two rounds.

Everton team news vs Boreham Wood: Mykolenko to start for Toffees
- Ins: None
- Outs: Yerry Mina, Fabian Delph, Ben Godfrey, Tom Davies, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dele Alli, Donny van de Beek, Anwar El Ghazi
- Doubts: None
Everton will once again be able to call upon Abdoulaye Doucoure and Demarai Gray after they overcame groin and hip injuries respectively, which will be a boost for Lampard considering how many players are absent. Ben Godfrey, Yerry Mina, Fabian Delph, Tom Davies and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are all still out with injuries, but they are joined by a trio of cup-tied players.
Dele Alli, Donny van de Beek and Anwar El Ghazi will all miss out on the visit of Boreham Wood having already played in the FA Cup this season for Tottenham, Manchester United and Aston Villa respectively. However, Lampard has confirmed that Vitalii Mykolenko will start.
Lampard also spoke about his side’s controversial defeat to Manchester City at the weekend, in which the referee and VAR failed to award a penalty for handball on Rodri which would have given Everton the opportunity to take the lead. Everton made a formal complaint following the game and PGMOL later apologised for the mistake, though Lampard has revealed there was no in-depth discussion about what went wrong.
“There’s not much more to say now because you can’t change anything,” Lampard told reporters when asked about the apology.
“I don’t want to be a manager banging on about it weeks after the event. The only thing I hope is, now there’s been a few for Everton before I got here that have happened, that even with the benefit of VAR the human element has gone against us.
“I hope that can change. I’m not asking for anything, it’s just when you have such a clear one against you it brings it up in your mind. We hope going forward those ones won’t go against us.
“It was explained to me as an absolute mistake. It hasn’t been broken down to me, and that’s I think one of the reasons why a lot of us managers and probably fans and people in football would love to hear the conversations that happen between the on-pitch referee and VAR – not every conversation but one of these critical ones to see the method that got to the result that was a non-penalty.
“I don’t want to hold all referees to account on it. Mistakes can happen and this one was very clear.”
