Espanyol v Real Madrid pre-match information
Zinedine Zidane’s men have horns firmly firmly locked with eternal foes Barcelona atop of the championship table. Going into gameweek 32, both were level on 68 points, but Los Blancos controlled first place due to their superior head-to-head record. They may now tighten their grip on the title by beating Espanyol, having watched Iago Aspas’s late goal secure a point for Celta Vigo against Barcelona on Saturday.
Barça‘s city rivals, meanwhile, are staring relegation in the face. With seven matches remaining they are eight points adrift from safety and go into this game having won just one of their last eight league outings.
Espanyol & Real Madrid’s previous line-ups:
- Espanyol (vs Real Betis): López; Pipa, López, Naldo, Pedrosa; Embarba, Roca, Iturraspe, Darder; Campuzano, Calleri.
- Real Madrid (vs Mallorca): Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy*; Modric*, Valverde; Bale, Hazard, Vinícius; Benzema.
Dídac Vilà and Sébastien Corchia are both missing for Espanyol this weekend. Ferland Mendy and Luka Modric are both suspended for Real Madrid while Lucas Vázquez and Luka Jovic sit out through respective injuries.
Players to watch:
Espanyol: There’s no question Espanyol, who sit bottom of the championship, will be under the cosh when Real come to town. So, attention naturally be on their defence, particularly goalkeeper Diego López, who has been near ever-present this season but has kept four clean sheets to date. He is, of course, Los Blancos alumni, having been Jose Mourinho‘s first choice ahead of Iker Casillas circa 2013, and subsequently for a while under Carlo Ancelotti.
He now finds himself less protected by his defence than was the case in those days. Only three ‘keepers have faced more shots in La Liga than Lopez this season (376) and, accordingly, only two have made more saves (93).
Real Madrid: This has been a prolific season to remember for Sergio Ramos, who recently broke Ronald Koeman‘s record for most La Liga goals scored by a defender. Real’s skipper has eight league goals to date, which makes him the club’s second-leading marksman behind Karim Benzema.
No player has scored more La Liga goals since the restart than Ramos. He’s struck three times across Los Blancos’ previous four outings and, up against the Spanish top flight’s second-worst defence this season (50 goals conceded), the former Sevilla man might back himself to find the net again.
Scoreline prediction: Espanyol 1-3 Real Madrid
