Real Madrid return to La Liga action when they face Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium on Sunday afternoon (15:15 UK time).
Carlo Ancelotti’s men were on the receiving end of a huge Champions League upset earlier this week and the Budgerigars seek to inflict more pain on the 13-time European champions.

Espanyol vs Real Madrid build-up & previous line-ups:
Heading into matchday eight of this La Liga season Espanyol find themselves nearer the bottom of the young championship table having accumulated six points from 21 available. Vicente Moreno’s side began their 2021/22 campaign with a five-game winless streak (three draws and two defeats) before picking up a narrow 1-0 win over Alaves but last time out at Sevilla they fell to a 2-0 defeat. Despite their upcoming opponents recent poor results Espanyol have suffered 104 defeats across their 172 previous meetings with Real Madrid in Spain’s top division (winning 35 times and drawing a further 33), which is the most of any side against a single opponent in La Liga history. On top of that, following that subsequent win over Alavés, they could record back-to-back home La Liga wins for the first time since May 2019,
It’s been a couple of days to forget if you’re Real Madrid or their supporters. Last time out in La Liga the early leaders saw a four-game winning streak come to an end when Villarreal left Estadio Santiago Bernabéu with a hard fought point following a goalless draw. Carlo Ancelotti’s men were expected to rebound when facing Champions League newcomers Sheriff Tiraspol at home a few days later. However the rookies produced an upset of a lifetime when they ran out 1-2 winners subsequently putting Los Blancos heading into this weekend’s game. That being said, Real Madrid have not lost any of their last 18 away matches in LaLiga (12 wins and six draws) and, should they not lose, they will register their best unbeaten run away from home in competition history (19).

Player to watch: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
Widely considered underrated among many observers Karim Benzema has been anything but in recent months. The 33-year-old French marksman currently leads the race for this season’s Pichichi Trophy having bagged eight goals across seven La Liga outings. He’s done so with an expected goals total of 3.2 which makes him the player with the best differential between goals and xG in Europe’s big five leagues in 2021/22 (+4.8). It’s not just finding the net where Benzema has excelled. Real’s leading man has created no fewer than seven goals which puts him comfortably on the throne as the league’s ‘assist king’. No player in Spain’s top division has been involved in more goals (15) than Benzema who has netted seven times before against Espanyol with four of those coming on the road.
