Erling Haaland marks debut with 20-minute hat-trick as Dortmund win eight-goal thriller
Erling Haaland marked his Borussia Dortmund debut with a stunning 20-minute hat-trick as Lucien Favre’s men ran out 5-3 winners at Augsburg.
The eight-time Bundesliga champions were staring defeat in the face when the 19-year-old Norwegian marksman came on to make his first appearance for Die Borussen following a lucrative move from Red Bull Salzburg earlier this month.
Haaland’s stunning BVB debut: Five key things to know…
- Haaland became hot property after bagging eight goals across six Champions League appearances for Red Bull Salzburg.
- A number of Europe’s giants were keen to sign the 19-year-old Norwegian marksman, including Man Utd and Juventus.
- Haaland opted for Borussia Dortmund, who have become renowned for developing young talent.
- He started on the bench against Augsburg before coming on to register a 20-minute hat-trick as BVB came back from 3-1 down to win.
- Haaland has now registered six hat-tricks in all competitions this season.
Augsburg had raced into a 3-1 lead, with forward Florian Niederlechner grabbing two of those goals, before Haaland’s introduction. BVB beat off stiff competition for one of Europe’s rising stars, which reportedly included Manchester United and Juventus, after meeting his £17.1m buyout clause but no one could have foreseen such a superb start to life in Germany.
Haaland struck three minutes after coming on, before Jadon Sancho – another incredibly talented 19-year-old – levelled proceedings. Manager Favre saw his side take the lead in the 70th minute through Haaland and 11 minutes from time the youngster completes a sensational hat-trick.
Incredibly, he’s not the first BVB player to wear the number 17 jersey and score three times on debut against Augsburg. Back in 2013 when Jurgen Klopp was at the helm, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announced himself in equally impressive fashion.

Today’s result leaves Dortmund four points off leaders RB Leipzig, whom many felt Haaland would sign for given the relationship between them and his former club, but his individual performance suggests he is perfectly in sync with Dortmund and his decision was the right one.
Prior to this weekend, Haaland had bagged 16 goals across 14 appearances in Austria‘s top division, which included three hat-tricks. He also netted eight times in six Champions League outings, including one hat-trick. And not forgetting another triple in a cup game against SC/ESV Parndorf last July.
Favre has previously spoken about giving Haaland some breathing room whilst claiming that expectations over his impact needed to be managed. However, this afternoon’s heroics at the WWK Arena will only enhance the calls for him to start this upcoming Friday when struggling Köln visit the Westfalenstadion.
