When people talk about English football in the modern era, they often refer only to the Premier League.

For example, despite Liverpool winning 18 league titles in the club’s history, they are yet to win a Premier League. Their last top-flight triumph came two years before the first division was rebranded.

Just six teams have managed to win the Premier League in its 27-year history, Manchester United, Blackburn, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Leicester City (!).

However, since its inception in 1888, the English First Division has brought an array of winners – 24 in total – some of which may surprise you.

But how has the success of certain teams grown in relation to others? Who were the early dominators of English top-flight football before Liverpool and Manchester United took over?

Check out the video above to find out just how the fortunes of the most successful English teams have changed between 1888 and 2018, in eye-catching graph format.
