The internet reacts as England bring football home as Women’s Euro 2022 champions
It’s coming home! At long last, it really is coming home!
It took extra-time and a whole lot of nerves, but England beat Germany 2-1 to lift the Uefa Women’s Euro 2022 trophy in front of over 87,000 fans on Sunday. Goals from substitutes Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly did the job for England despite a 79th-minute equaliser from Lina Magull.
England beating Germany in the final of a major tournament. It doesn’t get much better (or rarer) than that, does it?

Sunday felt like far more than just a major trophy win — even if it was England Women’s first-ever and the nation’s first since 1966. It felt more like an outpouring as history was made and a path was paved for the future.
As always, Twitter was awash with messages of congratulations and pure joy for the Lionesses, with celebrities, journalists and footballers alike having their say…
Absolutely unreal scenes at Wembley!! Massive congrats to the amazing @Lionesses!! @ellatoone99 take a bow for that finish too 👌

Football is a simple game. 22 women chase a ball for 90 minutes and, at the end, England actually win. Congratulations @lionesses. Fabulous.

There were some huge, defining moments throughout the match, from a number of interventions by goalkeeping hero Mary Earps, to the dramatic winner from Chloe Kelly — as well as the frightful equaliser from Lina Magull, which feels like a lifetime ago now…

1-1. That #GER mindset is so strong. Magull.

Chloe Kelly used to get the bus to Wembley on FA Cup final day, buy a programme and then get the bus home. She's just scored at Wembley in a Euros final. Drink it in.

With records being broken left, right and centre, it’s all about the future now for women’s football.
As Gabby Logan put it: “The Lionesses brought football home, now it’s down to all of us to keep it here.”
