It’s difficult not to reflect on the last time England faced Scotland at a major tournament ahead of Friday’s meeting between the Auld Enemies.
Back at Wembley Stadium 25 years on from that Euro 96 group fixture, the rivalry will be renewed with one of the starters from that day, Gareth Southgate, now leading the Three Lions from the touchline.
But the parallels do not stop there. At the heart of this England side is Phil Foden, who has embraced comparisons to Paul Gascoigne by matching the legend’s iconic Euro 96 trim for the tournament.
Foden said ahead of the match: “I remember watching highlights on the TV of Gazza, [he was an] unbelievable player. It wouldn’t be too bad if I try to bring a bit of Gazza on the pitch.”
Foden looks the part, now will he deliver?
Recreating Gascoigne’s wondergoal from that 2-0 win in 1996 might be asking too much, but we’ve rolled it back with this nostalgic ‘Request A Bet’ for England fans ahead of Friday night’s showdown. Click on the graphic below (18+ only) to back England to win 2-0 and Foden to score last.
