Empoli vs Atalanta build-up & previous line-ups:
Empoli were unable to make it three Serie A wins on the bounce just before the recent international break. Aurelio Andreazzoli’s men fell to a 2-0 defeat at Roma and left them sitting comfortably in mid-table on nine points. At home they recently ended a three-game losing streak when The Blues claimed a 4-2 success over Bologna which maintained their recent knack (four games and counting) of conceding at least two goals at home. Only once before have they conceded two or more in five consecutive Italian top division home matches: in 2002, however, that was across two different seasons. Empoli’s only three home wins over Atalanta, across nine previous meetings, have come in the games in which they’ve found the net.
Across the past few seasons Atalanta have established themselves as Serie A’s most prolific side. However, so far they’ve only managed to register 10 goals across their opening seven matches, which leaves them sitting in eighth on 11 points. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men come into this latest round on a two-game winless streak and last went three in a row without a Serie A win in November 2020 when they mustered two points from six available. That being said, Atalanta’s last Serie A away defeat was in March 2021 (1-0 v Inter); since that loss The Goddess have picked up six wins and three draws, across this period only Napoli (9) and Milan (8) have won more games on the road.

Player to watch: Duván Zapata (Atalanta)
Having missed Atalanta’s opening two Serie A games due to a sprain Duván Zapata returned to action with a bang registering a goal against Fiorentina before doing the same against Salernitana the following week. He blanked next time out when Sassuolo visited though he produced a first assist of the season. Another misfire at Inter Milan followed before picking up his third goal and second assist of the campaign last time out against Milan though it was in a losing effort. Zapata comes into this weekend’s game with a mixed record. He scored three goals in his first three matches against Empoli in Serie A, two in two games with Udinese and one with Napoli, but he’s since failed to score against the Toscani in his last four, including the last two with Atalanta.
