Both Elina Svitolina and Marketa Vondrousova will be hoping to reach a dream Wimbledon final to cap off wonderful tournaments when they face off in the semi-finals today. Svitolina was a wild card entry for Wimbledon, marking her comeback to tennis earlier this year after giving birth. It’s been a fantastic return to action so far this year for the Ukrainian, who has already reached the French Open quarter-finals and won the Internationaux de Strasbourg in May.

Back at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021, when she bowed out at the second round, Svitolina has mimicked her run from 2019 when she reached the final and now has her eyes set on a first ever Grand Slam final. It’s been an excellent run at Wimbledon so far too, with Venus Williams, Elise Mertens, Sofia Kenin and Viktoria Azarenka all beaten en route to the quarter-finals, where world no.1 Iga Swiatek was knocked out in a 7-5, (5) 6-7, 6-2 victory for Svitolina.

Once the 14th-best player in the world, four years ago, Vondrousova entered Wimbledon this year as the world No.42, having also missed a chunk of action — only unlike Svitolina, this was due to injury and subsequent surgery. The Czech star made her return this year but bowed out relatively early at the Australian and French Opens, losing in the third and second rounds respectively.

Vondrousova had a good start to Wimbledon this year, not dropping a single set in her first three matches against Peyton Stearns, Veronika Kudermetova or Donna Vekic, before needing to come from behind to beat Marie Bouzkova. Then, in the quarter-finals, Vondrousova beat fourth seed Jessica Pegula in three sets, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to reach just a second-ever Grand Slam semi-final — after her run to the French Open final in 2019.

Prediction: Elina Svitolina in three sets
