The 2023 EFL Cup final is set with Manchester United taking on Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.

It’s a repeat of the 1999 FA Cup final, which Man Utd won 2-0 thanks to goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes en route to their historic treble.

Newcastle haven’t been in a final since then, but finally secured their return thanks to a 3-1 aggregate victory over Southampton in their semi-final, winning 1-0 at St Mary’s in the first leg and then following up with a 2-1 win on Tyneside in front of a cacophonous Geordie atmosphere. It is also Newcastle’s first League Cup final appearance since 1976.

Attention then turned to Old Trafford as Man Utd looked to avoid an almighty capitulation against Nottingham Forest, having taken a 3-0 lead into their second leg. In the end they had absolutely nothing to worry about, even after a drab first half, as goals from Anthony Martial and Fred secured the 5-0 aggregate victory.

There may be a few league matches to come first, but fans will already be planning their trips and dreaming of that trophy lift.
