Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is better than Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson, according to Watford’s Heurelho Gomes.

The Brazilian pair have been vital to their respective sides’ title charges this season with Alisson helping to transform Liverpool’s defence under Jurgen Klopp.

Alisson or Ederson: Who is the better goalkeeper? Five key things to know…

  1. Ederson first joined Man City in 2017, playing a big part in their Premier League title win last season.
  2. Alisson made the move from Roma to Liverpool last summer and has been equally as important as they search for a first Premier League title.
  3. The Reds’ shot-stopper has conceded just 18 goals in 31 appearances so far, keeping 17 clean sheets.
  4. And Heurelho Gomes believes Alisson is a better goalkeeper than his compatriot Ederson.
  5. However the Watford goalkeeper has backed Ederson to usurp Alisson in the future.

Alisson has kept 17 clean sheets in 31 Premier League appearances so far, more than any other goalkeeper and three more than Ederson who has conceded 21 goals.

And Gomes, who first stepped in the Premier League in 2008 with Tottenham, believes the Liverpool man is a complete goalkeeper.

He told BBC Sport: “Alisson is a very good shot-stopper, but also he can play very well with his feet which is important for the way Liverpool plays.

“I believe he is a complete goalkeeper. That’s why he is playing for Liverpool.

“Sometimes Alisson takes a lot of risks. But maybe this is also because of the coach just encouraging him to continue to do that.

“For me, it’s not a weakness but it can affect the team.”

Gomes also had equal praise for Alisson’s title rival Ederson, who has been Man City’s number one since joining from Benfica in 2017.

“Ederson’s kick is amazing and he’s also a very good shot-stopper,” he added.

“He can place the ball where he wants. I believe this is one of the reasons Manchester City signed him.

“I believe Ederson’s cross is still a little bit… he needs to come out for crosses. Of course in the Premier League it’s so difficult because of the pace of the ball.”

And while Gomes believes Alisson does have a slight edge over Ederson, he admits the Manchester City man can eclipse his compatriot.

“They are both similar to be honest, they are both similar players. At the moment Alisson because I believe he’s more complete at the moment than Ederson.

“Of course I believe Ederson still has so many things to show. I believe he can rise up as a better goalkeeper than Alisson.”

Alisson vs Ederson

Alisson has been nothing short of superb for Liverpool this season and deserves every plaudit which comes his way, whether or not the Reds do win the title.

But Ederson has done his best to keep up with his compatriot, conceding just three more goals in one fewer appearance.

On average, Alisson faces 2.55 shots on target per 90 minutes in the Premier League and has saved a stunning 2.03 of those. Ederson, meanwhile, has saved 1.57 of the 2.27 shots on target he has faced.

One instance Ederson does come out on top is with catches, averaging 0.5 per 90 compared to Alisson’s 0.35.

Both goalkeepers are also yet to save a penalty in the Premier League this season, though Alisson has only faced one compared to Ederson’s four.
