Barcelona will be looking to secure passage into the Champions League knockout stages when they visit Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday evening (8pm kick-off).

Ronald Koeman’s men have a  perfect record after winning their opening three group stage fixtures and they need just a point to make the round of 16 for a 17th consecutive season.

As for their opponents, there’s a slim chance of Dynamo making it into the next round so Mircea Lucescu’s focus is ensuring the Ukrainian champions will be playing Europa League football after the winter break.

Heading into this showdown Kyiv are level with Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros, both holding each other to a 2-2 draw on matchday two, and they’ll be squaring off in the final gameweek.

Dynamo Kyiv & Barcelona’s previous line-ups:

Dynamo Kyiv (vs Ingulets): Bushchan; Kedziora, Zabarnyi, Mykolenko, Karavaev; Shepelev, Garmash; Shaparenko, Buyalskyi, De Pena; Supryaga.

Barcelona (vs Atlético Madrid): Ter Stegen; Roberto*, Piqué*, Lenglet, Alba; Pjanic, De Jong; Dembélé, Messi, Pedri; Griezmann.

Volodymyr Kostevych and Mykyta Burda will not be available for the hosts as they continue their recovery after sustaining respective serious injuries. Barcelona have confirmed Gerard Pique has a sprain in his right knee and could be out for a while. Sergi Roberto is another who’ll miss their Champions League showdown in the Ukrainian capital. Sergio Busquets, Ansu Fati and Ronald Araujo remain sidelined.

Players to watch:

Dynamo Kyiv: The gulf in quality between Dynamo and Barça suggests Lucescu’s men will be on the backfoot from kick-off. So naturally focus is on their rearguard capabilities, but that doesn’t necessarily mean those lining up in defence, but rather leading from the front. Someone who has put in a shift for the Ukrainian powerhouse this season is Mykola Shaparenko who comes into this game having registered a goal against Premier Liga rivals Inhulets Petrove over the weekend. The midfielder started that league game on the flanks, however in Europe’s premier club competition he’s been predominantly used in central midfield, across two outings Shaparenko averages four tackles per game and he’ll need to be as aggressive if Kyiv are to cause an upset.

Barcelona: Talisman Lionel Messi entered this present campaign with heavy speculation surrounding his long-term future. For now the Argentine ‘number 10’ is committed to Barça’s cause and in the Champions League it’s been business as usual. He has netted in each of his previous three appearances from 13 shots on goal (excluding blocks) which is a competition high. Messi’s creativity is also showing no bounds, to date he’s created 13 chances for his teammates (with two of those leading to a goal), which betters everyone in this season’s tournament so far. However, he’s been rested for the trip to Ukraine and left out of the squad entirely. So expect Antoine Griezmann to carry the attacking burden.
