Gambia travel to DR Congo in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying hoping to end the group stage with a win on Monday (5pm kick-off UK time).

The Scorpions have already secured their spot in next year’s tournament, and DR Congo cannot qualify, so there is only pride to play for.

DR Congo vs Gambia build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

DR Congo entered the current international break knowing they would have a hard task of qualifying for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, facing the two teams above them in Group D. A win over Gabon would have put them in pole position but they were blown away by their opponents last week, losing 3-0 to end all hopes of a fifth consecutive Africa Cup of Nations. It was DR Congo’s first defeat of the qualification group, but they have also won just one, drawing the remaining three, results that have ultimately cost them.

But on the other side of this fixture, it’s time for celebration as Gambia secured qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history by beating Angola 1-0 last week. Assan Ceesay scored the all-important goal for Gambia in the second half, allowing them to put their feet up for this game (although they will undoubtedly be looking to finish top of Group D for that added excitement). To finish top, Gambia need to better Gabon’s result against Angola, or outscore them by two if both teams win, due to an inferior goal difference.

  • DR Congo (vs Gabon): Kiassumbua; Mpeko, Tisserand, Bokadi, N’Sakala; Mbemba, Bangala; Botaka, Mputu, Muleka; Kasengu.
  • Gambia (vs Angola): Jobe; Sanneh, Sonko Sundberg, Colley, Modou; Mbye, Marreh; Jallow, Manneh, Barrow; Ceesay.

We could see both sides rotate quite heavily for this game with very little on the line.

Player to watch: Musa Barrow (Gambia)

Whether he starts in a stronger XI or comes on as a substitute, you can expect Musa Barrow to cause the DR Congo defence serious problems. Barrow is one of Gambia’s brightest stars and arguably the most recognisable name in the squad, among the wider football fandom.

The forward currently plies his trade in Serie A with Bologna, on loan from Atalanta with an obligation to buy this summer, having joined the latter’s academy in 2017. Barrow is capable of playing both on the wing and through the middle, something he has done for Bologna with a lot of success this season, scoring six goals and recording seven assists in 28 appearances, with only Roberto Soriano being directly involved in more goals for the club.

Barrow plays almost exclusively on the wing for Gambia, so hasn’t had the same impact for the nation as he does at club level, but he is the future and will be looking to cap this Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in fitting fashion.
