Another week of the January transfer window has passed.

Life has been intensely dramatic and for once the transfer window hasn’t quite kept up. That’s not to say nothing has happened, there have been plenty of done deals going on. Here are some you may have missed from the last week.

1. Islam Slimani

  • From: Leicester
  • To: Lyon
  • Fee: Free
  • Football Index value: £0 (Sell)  £0.33 (Buy)

Islam Slimani somehow never managed to translate his tremendous qualities to success in the Premier League but after half a decade and various loans, he’s finally been cut loose by the Foxes and will look to restart his career at the head of a quality Lyon side.

2. Lucas Piazon

  • From: Chelsea
  • To: Braga
  • Fee: Undisclosed
  • Football Index value: £0.09 (Sell)  £0.25 (Buy)

When Chelsea signed Lucas Piazon in 2011, the Brazilian was one of the most highly coveted prospects in the world. However for one reason or another he never came remotely close to making good on his massive potential. A decade of loan moves followed and now Chelsea have finally cut their losses and sold their longest serving player to Portuguese club Braga.

3. Kevin Strootman

  • From: Marseille
  • To: Genoa
  • Fee: Loan
  • Football Index value: £0 (Sell)  £0.30 (Buy)

Kevin Strootman was once so good that people argued that Louis van Gaal would have succeeded at Manchester United if only he had been able to sign Strootman from Roma. Serious injury devastated his ability to cover ground the way he needed to and he was most recently playing for Marseille, but even they felt he wasn’t up to it and he’s been loaned to Italian side Genoa.

4. Max Meyer

  • From: Crystal Palace
  • To: Free agent confirmation
  • Fee: N/A
  • Football Index value: £0 (Sell)  £0.54 (Buy)

Max Meyer was once a genuinely thrilling prospect. He represented Germany at every youth level imaginable and captained the U23 side to a Silver Medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. He looked destined for greatness, but it just never seemed to happen. A move to Crystal Palace all but signalled he wouldn’t reach the top but he never even raised Palace’s level. After failing to play a single second in 2020/21, Palace have simply terminated his contract via mutual consent and allowed him to pursue other avenues. Let’s see where he goes.

5. Mesut Ozil

  • From: Arsenal
  • To: Fenerbahce
  • Fee: Free
  • Football Index value: £0.22 (Sell)  £0.29 (Buy)

The majestic and magnificent Mesut Ozil was, for years, the gold standard of creativity in the Premier League. He began to slow down and Arsenal’s failure to really keep him fit, focused and involved when they finally signed a striker that complemented him is a big shame, and the way they froze him out for the majority of a year was shameful. Still, now he’s free and out to find his bliss in Turkey where he will be the star of a stacked Fenerbahce side.

6. Danny Drinkwater

  • From: Chelsea
  • To: Kasimpasa
  • Fee: Loan
  • Football Index value: £0 (Sell)  £0.17 (Buy)

When Danny Drinkwater signed for Chelsea it kind of made sense in terms of backing up Cesc Fabregas. The thing is, though, he was never really deployed in that role by Antonio Conte and as a result, got nowhere near his Premier League title-winning form from his days at Leicester. The Englishman just seemed impossible to get going, and so as loans to other English clubs didn’t work out, he’s now been loaned to a Turkish side in the hopes that this can reinvigorate his career.

7. Jack Wilshere

  • From: Unattached
  • To: Bournemouth
  • Fee: Free
  • Football Index value: £0.14 (Sell)  £0.28 (Buy)

Jack Wilshere is so disappointing to think about. The immense promise of his early days at Arsenal could have led to him being England’s best midfielder for a decade but it just never worked out like that. Through a combination of injuries and bad luck he missed so much crucial development time. He even became too dysfunctional for West Ham who let him go and allowed Bournemouth to pick him up on a free. Perhaps dropping down to the Championship will help get him going again and we can see glimpses of his genius once again.

8. Mario Mandzukic

  • From: Unattached
  • To: Milan
  • Fee: Free
  • Football Index value: £0.21 (Sell)  £0.55 (Buy)

Mario Mandzukic looked all set to sail off into the sunset when he swapped Juventus for Qatari outfit Al-Duhail SC back in 2019. However, the 34-year-old has been without a club since his spell in the Middle East proved to be shortlived.

And now Milan have snapped him up on a free transfer, with the Croatian signing a deal until the end of the 2020/21 season. He brings a wealth of experience to Stefano Pioli’s frontline courtesy of spells at Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid. Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be pleased.
