Diego Forlan: Inter told me who they plan to replace Mauro Icardi with
Diego Forlan claims Inter Milan will sign Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann to replace Mauro Icardi, if the Argentine is sold this summer.
Forlan played for both Atletico and Inter during his playing days and has insisted the Italian giants have ‘told’ him of their summer transfer plans.
Could Griezmann join Inter? Five key things to know…
- Antoine Griezmann has been key for Atletico over the years and is their top scorer this season with 18 goals.
- However, the Frenchman has long been linked with moves to the likes of Barca and Man Utd.
- Diego Forlan believes Inter could sign him if they sell wantaway striker Mauro Icardi.
- Icardi is Inter’s top-scorer with 15 goals this season.
- But the Argentine hasn’t featured for the club since mid-February and has been at the centre of a club vs player contract dispute.

“If [Griezmann] stayed at Atletico Madrid he’d become a legend, but Inter will buy him once Icardi is sold,” the 39-year-old told ESPN.
“The club told me this.”
Icardi has scored 122 goals during his time with Inter but his future continues to be in doubt after a series of contract standoffs, time on the sidelines and disputes with the club’s hierarchy, reportedly fueled by wife and agent, Wanda Nara.
Wanda has been extremely public in her criticism of Inter and even went as far as advising the club on what kind of player they should be signing to bring the best out of her husband.
“More than giving Mauro a new contract, I’d prefer Inter to sign someone capable of giving him five good balls in every game,” she told Italian talkshow Tiki Taka in Feburary.

Diego Simeone ‘not worried’ about Griezmann exit
Griezmann has long been a reported target for the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United, and if Inter were to sign him, it would represent a massive coup and statement of intent for the Serie A club.
However, despite the constant rumours swirling around the France international, Atletico manager Diego Simeone insists he is not worried and is still planning for a future with Griezmann.
“Honestly, I am not worried about the Griezmann issue. He is a captain of Atletico Madrid. He has always responded with football, with facts, what he wants,” Simeone told a recent press conference.
“If I imagine the next season without Griezmann? No, I can not imagine the next season without him because he has a contract with the club, he is one of the captains of Atletico, he gave everything since he arrived and I imagine tomorrow he will have a great match.
“Everything I imagine is around Griezmann.”
