For many, Denmark and China will be battling it out to finish second in Group D (which also includes England and Haiti) so this result could go some way in deciding who makes it through to the knockout stages, even with it being the opening match. However, both sides will be looking to win the group and know victory would put them in good stead, building momentum.

Denmark are taking part in their sixth World Cup but first since 2007, giving some of their star players the first chance at taking on the world stage. Since their last World Cup, Denmark have been ever-present at the European Championships and finished as runners-up in 2017 but were knocked out of the group stage a year ago.

China, meanwhile, have been present at seven of the past eight World Cups only missing out in 2011 but they are still waiting their first success, going closest in 1999 when they were beaten on penalties in the final by USA. Last time out in France, China only made it to the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to Italy, a disappointing result.

They also go into this tournament as the Asian champions, winning last year’s Asian Cup by beating South Korea 3-2 in the final, the ninth time they have won the competition.

Denmark are a team without a standout goalscorer with Pernille Harder often the player who takes responsibility and she is in good form coming into the tournament. But Signe Bruun will be hoping she can make an impact as the leading lady, especially as she has been spearheading the attack while Harder was injured. In qualifying for the World Cup, Bruun scored 13 goals in seven games including five in an 8-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

China haven’t had the best of times in warming up for the World Cup, failing to win their two friendlies in Australia, losing to Brazil and drawing with Colombia. But that doesn’t mean they’re not exciting to watch. The draw with Colombia finished 2-2 while Brazil beat China 3-0. There was also a 2-1 win over Russia in a friendly in China before they set off for the World Cup.
