A former Wilmbledon semifinalist Denis Shapovalov will be looking to reach a third appearance in French Open second round in five years. There could have been another opening round success but Shapovalov opted to miss last year’s tournament after still remaining upset over an umpire’s mistake that cost him a five-set win over Roberto Carballes in 2019. Shapovalov does however hold a recent win over clay court master Rafael Nadal when he eliminated the Spaniard from the Rome Masters a few weeks ago.
Experience is something Holger Rune can not call upon as he’s making his Roland Garros debut. The venue will not be a stranger for the Dane as he’s a former Boys’ singles champion, defeating Toby Kodat in the 2019 final, 6–3, 6–7, 6–0. Rune also comes into this championship having lost both of his previous first round Grand Slam matches. That being said, he took a set off Novak Djokovic in the 2021 US Open and two sets against Soon Woo Kwon in the Australian Open earlier this year.
