In his last tournament, Medvedev — now ranked no.4 in the world — was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semi-final of the Astana Open, having to retire after the second set due to injury. Medvedev later described it as a medium strain but with the ATP Finals just a few weeks away, very few risks are going to be taken by those hoping or expecting to participate.
Back in action in Vienna, Medvedev was the top seed and opened the tournament against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili and cruised to a 6-2 6-2 victory, showing no signs of his muscle strain bothering him. Then in the next round Medvedev was just as comfortable in victory over Dominic Thiem, beating the former world no.3 6-3 6-3.
Looking to end Medvedev’s tournament, Sinner has had a decent 2022 in Grand Slams, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Since reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open, Sinner has taken part in the Sofia Open, making it to the semi-finals before having to retire in the final set having been top seed.
An ankle injury is what stopped Sinner’s progress, though he was one game away from losing the match anyway, but the Italian has recovered after missing the Astana Open. The sixth seed in Vienna, Sinner opened the tournament with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Cristian Garin before beating Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-3.
