Daniil Medvedev will be aiming to finish 2022 on a high at the Year–end Championships after falling below expectations in his previous two Grand Slam appearances. The world ranked No. 5 reached the Australian Open Final back in January, but his performance against Rafa Nadal has very much reflected how this year has gone for him: a bright start, followed by disappointment.

The towering 26-year-old was leading Nadal by two sets, but he was dealt a sobering reality check by tennis’ most trophy-laden figure, as the Spaniard went on to win 3-2. Since then, Medvedev has failed to make it past the Fourth Round at Roland-Garros and most recently the US Open, where polarising Aussie Nick Kyrgios eliminated him 3-1. He was also absent at Wimbledon as tournament organisers prohibited Russian and Belarusian players from participating in London due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Medvedev’s compatriot, Andrey Rublev, enters this concluding tournament as the No. 8 seed, just three off his personal best, and will be hoping to cause an upset to finish off what has been a promising year, in which he has reached two Grand Slam quarter-finals. The 25-year-old most recently made the final-eight at the US Open, and will be hoping that his Flushing Meadows form can spur him on in Turin.

Scoreline prediction: Daniil Medvedev 2-1 Andrey Rublev
