After losing in the first round at Wimbledon, Evans has had a decent run in tournaments, reaching at least the quarter-finals on four different occasions including last time out at the European Open before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime. His best performance came in the San Diego Open when he made it to the semi-finals before losing to Marcos Giron, though Evans was top seed for that tournament.

Unseeded in Vienna, Evans opened the tournament against Lucky Loser Oscar Otte and dispatched the German in two sets, winning 6-4 7-6 (3). Things were a lot more straightforward in the second round against Karen Khachanov with Evans winning 6-2 6-2, but the Brit knows he will need to be on top of his game if he is to avoid another quarter-final exit (having been knocked out of the doubles tournament at that very stage).

After a third-round exit at the US Open, Shapovalov bounced back to reach the final of the Korea Open but he was unable to get over the line, losing in straight sets to Yoshihito Nishioka, having entered the tournament as fourth seed. There was another deep run in the Japan Open for Shapovalov, though this time he only managed to reach the semi-finals before losing to third seed Taylor Fritz.

In the first round of the Vienna Open, Shapovalov beat wildcard and hometown boy Jurji Rodionov in straight sets, to secure a rematch of the Japan Open semi-finals against fourth seed Fritz. This time Shapovalov got his revenge, beating the American 6-1 4-6 6-3 to set up this match. The winner will face either Hubert Hurkacz or Borna Coric, in the more favourite side of the draw.
