Arsenal predicted XI v Crystal Palace: Team news as Takehiro Tomiyasu "close" to return

Published: 15:55, 2 April 2022

Arsenal travel to Selhurst Park on Monday to face Crystal Palace with the view to staying in the top four (8pm kick-off UK time).

The Gunners went into the weekend fourth, three points clear of rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand, and are undoubtedly in control of the race for Champions League football. Palace, meanwhile, are 11th but look comfortable in the fight against relegation and may be turning their attention to their FA Cup semi-final later this month.

Arsenal team news vs Crystal Palace: Gunners looking fresh ahead of final run-in

  • Doubts: Aaron Ramsdale, Takehiro Tomiyasu

Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale had to pull out of the England squad for the recent friendlies due to illness and injury respectively. However, it is hoped that move will return to the squad for the visit to Selhurst Park on Monday night, with Saka having recovered from Covid.

Arsenal fans will also be boosted by the news of Takehiro Tomiyasu’s potential return after a poor run with injuries. Tomiyasu joined Arsenal last summer and is their first-choice right-back when fit, but has been available for just 16 Premier League matches so far.

The Japanese international first suffered a thigh problem at the start of the New Year but made his return to the bench against Brentford in February, only to be ruled out once again.

But Tomiyasu has returned to training and Arteta has revealed he could be close to getting a place in the squad for Monday’s game.

“I think he will be close,” Arteta said of Tomiyasu in his pre-match press conference.

“He’s been training more and more. He has the boys back now so he will be joining some sessions this week so let’s see how he is.

“He had a recurring injury but in the other calf which was strange and difficult to predict.

“He’s been through a lot in the last two years with the number of games he’s played and all the covid, the transition to a different league where the intensity is completely different.

“Hopefully, we can find the right reasons so we don’t go through that situation again because especially for him it’s been tough.”
