The world’s gaze is centred on Qatar and football’s quadrennial World Cup, but over in Malaga, tennis is showcasing its own knockout international tournament with the 2022 Davis Cup. Competed throughout the year across various locations, the knockouts have finally arrived in Spain and they started with a bang on Tuesday.
Australia kicked things off with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands to advance to the semi-finals, where they will meet one of either Spain or Croatia. Alex de Minaur and Jordan Thompson both recovered from going a set down to Dutch duo Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Griekspoor respectively to record 3-2 wins and secure the Aussies a place in the penultimate round.
A six-time winner, Spain will feel confident of progressing to the semis to face Australia when they take on Croatia. Teenage sensation and recent US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz was the star of Spain’s qualifying win over Romania back in March, while they also topped Group B, but he has been forced to withdraw due to injury. So, the team is comprised of Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos Vinolas, Pedro Martinez, Pablo Carreno Busta and Marcel Granollers, with Sergi Bruguera as captain.
Croatia meanwhile came second in Group A with a 2-1 record but they will surely fancy their chances of making another deep run in the Davis Cup after reaching the 2021 final last December in Madrid.
