Alexander Zverev is one of the biggest names in tennis right now and will no doubt be eyeing up future dominance, still only 25. The German went into the 2022 Italian Open as the second seed, with only Novak Djokovic ranked higher, and was given a bye to the second round as a result. There, he started his tournament against Argentinian Sebastian Baez and got through in straight sets, winning 7-6 (8-6) 6-3, overcoming a tough first set to eventually cruise through.

It was the reverse in Zverev’s third round tie against Australian Alex de Minaur. After a fairly routine first set, Zverev won the second on a tie breaker, taking the match 6-3 7-6 (7-5). Zverev has now reached back-to-back quarter-finals in the Italian Open, bowing out at this stage last year to Rafael Nadal – when he was just a sixth seed.

Cristian Garin, meanwhile, is in the Italian Open for just the third time and has already reached his personal best, progressing each year. In 2020, the Chilean went out at the first round and last year he only made it to the second, so whatever happens from here will surely be seen as a bonus.

Garin had a fairly straightforward start to the tournament, beating wildcard Italian Francesco Passaro 6-3 6-2 in the first round and Emil Ruusuvuori in the second. Some may have backed Garin to bow out in the third round, against the experienced Marin Cilic but the Chilean came through that match in three sets, winning 6-3 4-6 6-4. Can he add another big name to his scalp collection?

Prediction: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets
