Costa Rica vs Paraguay Copa America live stream: Confirmed team news and probable line-ups

They may not be mathematically out of the Copa America but Costa Rica require a minor miracle if they are to qualify for the knockout stages and will be hoping to at least do their part against an already-eliminated Paraguay at the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

An admirable goalless draw with Brazil – one of the pre-tournament favourites – on matchday one gave hope for Los Ticos of escaping the group. However, a 3-0 humbling at the hands of Colombia leaves Costa Rica in need of a victory in their final game, as well as both a defeat for Brazil against Colombia and a six-goal swing.

Paraguay meanwhile have had a torrid tournament, with defeats in both of their two group games so far, and they could find life difficult against a Costa Rica side still in with an outside chance of qualification.

Slow starts a real issue for Los Guaranies

No matter the result for Paraguay in this encounter, Daniel Garnero’s men will be exiting the tournament after losing both of their opening two encounters.

While their opponents were the two toughest teams in Group D, Los Guaranies failed to keep a solid defence throughout the first 45 in each and this frailty has likely cost them a spot in the quarter-finals for a third successive tournament.

Both Daniel Munoz and Jefferson Lerma found the back of the net in the first half as Colombia defeated Paraguay 2-1 on matchday one, while three of Brazil’s four goals against Los Guaranies came before the interval – a tally which could have been worse had Lucas Paqueta not missed his penalty after half an hour.

Costa Rica have yet to score at this year’s Copa America but, given Paraguay’s tendency to concede early, this could be about to change and provide Los Ticos with a glimmer of hope for progression.

Costa Rica vs Paraguay team news

Costa Rica boss Gustavo Alfaro will be forced into at least one change as Manfred Ugalde is suspended following his second yellow card of the tournament last time out.

Former Arsenal striker Joel Campbell and 19-year-old Warren Madrigal are the two most likely to battle it out to start alongside Alvaro Zamora, who has featured from the off in both of their group games so far.

Paraguay head coach Daniel Garnero will also be without one member of his squad, with Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andres Cubas unavailable following his straight red card against Brazil.

Libertad’s Hernesto Caballero could be the man to fill the void in the middle of the park, having started the opening game against Colombia, while Brighton’s Julio Enciso – one of two players to score for Los Guaranies in this group – should keep his place on the left wing, with Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron occupying the opposite flank.
