The 2021 Copa Libertadores is nearing its conclusion with the competition already at the semi-final stage.

Less than three months after Palmeiras were crowned champions of the 2020 Copa Libertadores, the next edition of South America’s biggest club tournament got underway, with 32 teams entering at the group stages after three rounds of qualifying which saw the likes of Gremio and Universidad de Chile bow out.

From those 32 teams, 16 made it through to the knockout stages, with group winners and runners-up continuing their Copa Libertadores journeys while third-placed sides dropped down to the Copa Sudamericana. Sixteen went into eight and we are now down to the final four as teams can start dreaming of glory.

Defending champions Palmeiras are still in the running to retain their title, but they face a a tough double-header against fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, with the two ties scheduled to take place in the final weeks of September.

The other semi-final sees Brazilian side Flamengo taking on Barcelona of Ecuador, who will be looking to reach the Copa Libertadores final for just the third time in their history and first since 1998. The final is currently scheduled for 20 November in Montevideo, Uruguay.
