Tony Cascarino believes Conor Gallagher would be a perfect fit for Liverpool

Former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino believes Conor Gallagher would be best suited to the system Jurgen Klopp plays at Liverpool.

The 22-year-old Chelsea graduate is currently flourishing out on loan at Crystal Palace, where he has notched eight goals in just 25 Premier League games from midfield and fired himself into the England squad, recently making his second appearance against Switzerland.

Gallagher is currently spending his fourth season away from Stamford Bridge, having had temporary stints at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and now Palace, but it has been with the latter where he has truly emerged as an elite-level box-to-box midfielder under Patrick Vieira.

There are now suggestions Gallagher could well be a Chelsea first-teamer next season when he returns from Selhurst Park, but Cascarino believes the energetic midfielder would work best playing at Anfield, before conceding the Blues are unlikely to sell directly to a Premier League rival.

“Conor Gallagher is an outstanding attacking midfielder who always looks like he’s going to get a goal or make an assist,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“I like him because I don’t think there’s too many of his type around.

“Liverpool, for me, if they had a player like that as well adding him behind their front three, with his ability to get goals.

“Chelsea would never sell him to Liverpool, but they’d do really well with him.

“Conor Gallagher will get goals. Whether or not he will get his chance at Chelsea, I don’t know. No one at Chelsea can do what he does, but it depends if Thomas Tuchel wants to play that kind of player in his system.

“I hope he does give him a chance.”

And it’s not just former players and pundits who have been impressed by Gallagher’s rise. England boss Gareth Southgate spoke in glowing terms about Gallagher after the Three Lions’ recent 2-1 win over Switzerland, in which the Palace loanee started in midfield.

“He’s infectious, isn’t he? I think he can set the tone for the rest of the team, we see that with his club every week,” Southgate said.

“He presses with ambition. Some players get close to people and don’t actually win the ball. He goes and he makes contact and he turns a lot of ball over.

“In the first half that was important. We actually didn’t use that ball well enough. We had three or four moments in attacking transitions where, with a better pass or a better decision, we should have capitalised before we did on the first goal.”
