It was nearly a disastrous start to Wimbledon for Coco Gauff after the teenage tyro lost the opening set of her First Round match-up against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, but she recovered to win the following two and claim a ticket to the next phase, where she meets the experienced Mihaela Buzarnescu.
Despite being just 18, this is Gauff’s 12th appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, rising to meteoric prominence at Wimbledon in 2019 as a 15-year-old wonderkid. Yet to win a major, Gauff appeared in the French Open final earlier this month, so it feels like a matter of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ for her.
Buzarnescu meanwhile is at the opposite end of her career, very much entering her twilight years as she turns 35 in 2023. She has only ever once made it past the Second Round at Wimbledon, reaching the Third Round in her debut appearance in 2018. She took down Nastasja Schunk in straight sets in her opener this year and will now be looking to produce a shock result on Centre Court.
