Still the joint-most successful side in NBA history with 17 championships, the LA Lakers are chasing number 18 that would put them one clear of the Boston Celtics but right now it doesn’t look likely to come this season. After 22 games played, the Lakers are bottom of the Pacific Division with a record of 10-12, and sit 13th out of 15 in the Western Conference – currently outside the qualification spots for the play-in tournament.

But it could have been so much worse. The Lakers go into this meeting with the Cleveland Cavaliers on the back of a three-game winning streak which has seen them beat the Portland Trail Blazers, Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards, with the latter two victories coming on the road. Those two wins have taken the Lakers’ away record to 4-6 for the season, and they’ll hope another victory will revive their post-season hopes.

On the other side of this game are the Cleveland Cavaliers, currently second in the Central Division with a record of 15-9, two wins behind leaders the Milwaukee Bucks albeit having played one more. The Cavaliers are also third in the Eastern Conference overall, behind only the Bucks and the Boston Celtics, are must feel fairly safe in their play-off spot as things stand.

They go into this game off the back of a defeat to the New York Knicks but that was on the road. At home they are a lot more formidable. From 11 games played at home this season, the Cavs have won 10, only falling in defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves last month. Since that defeat, the Cavs have won six home games, and a seventh would keep their push for the division title alive.
