Aryna Sabalenka reached her fifth quarterfinal of the season. She produced a forceful 6-3, 6-2 victory over Barbora Krejcikova in the fourth round. Sabalenka was done in 66 minutes without losing her serve and facing one breakpoint. Her season win-loss stands at 20-2, including 7-1 against top 20 players. Sabalenka has won all three rounds in straight sets and spent a total of three hours and 33 minutes on the court. The Belarusian, who is the 2019 doubles champion in Miami, was stopped at this point by eventual champion Ashleigh Barty in 2021 in three sets. Sabalenka has played 14 WTA 1000 quarterfinals in her career (9-5); no other player has made more of such quarterfinals in the last five years. The second seed has been into six semifinals since the start of August (four on US soil), including becoming the champion at the Australian Open and runner-up in Indian Wells and the WTA Finals.
As for Sorana Cirstea she’s not reached a WTA 1000 quarterfinal since October 2017 at the start of March. Cirstea has now put together back-to-back such appearances in the Sunshine Double. In her latest match, she took on Marketa Vondrousova last time out and ultimately prevailed 7-6, 6-4 after preventing the Czech from serving out the first set. She has won all four rounds in straight sets (but faced two tiebreaks), including against Caroline Garcia, 6-2, 6-3, and Karolina Muchova, 7-5, 6-1. This is her first-ever quarterfinal in Miami in 13 main draw outings; her previous best result was a last-16 in 2013 and where she had never won three matches in a row. Cirstea started the season by losing five of her first seven main draw matches and had not gone beyond the second round of any tournament since Birmingham in June.
