Pulisic ends Chelsea’s winless run and ensures Moyes’ continues in dramatic late win over West Ham

Christian Pulisic scored a 90th minute goal as Chelsea left it late to beat 10-man West Ham.

The Hammers went down to 10 men five minutes from time as Craig Dawson was sent off for fouling Romelu Lukaku. Jorginho missed the subsequent penalty, however, setting the stage for Pulisic’s late heroics.

A late surge up the left from Mason Mount saw him slip the ball wide for Marcos Alonso, and the Spaniard ran onto the pass and then whipped a delightful low cross into the area.

The ball fizzed around the turf behind the West Ham defensive line who had all followed Romelu Lukaku towards the goal. This opened a huge space into which strolled Pulisic to slide home a dramatic winner to finally halt Chelsea’s winless home run.

Chelsea had lost three consecutive games at Stamford Bridge, falling 1-4 to Brentford, 1-3 to Real Madrid and 2-4 to Arsenal. Not only did they not concede a massive amount of goals against West Ham but they kept a clean sheet at that!

The clean sheet allowed Pulisic to end the winless streak with his well-timed goal (the Blues’ first 90th minute winner since December) and lift Chelsea clear of Arsenal and firmly establish them as the third-best side in the league. The goal also meant that Pulisic equalled his best tally of 10 direct goal involvements across all competition (seven goals, three assists) for Chelsea.

Pulisic’s winner also continued the existence of another great losing streak in football as it was David Moyes’ 17th game against Chelsea, and the Scot has not won a single one. Moyes has drawn 7 and lost 10 of the matches he’s coached against the Blues and that is the second-longest streak of a manager facing a single club without winning.

Unfortunately for Moyes, the longest streak of a manager facing a single club without winning also belongs to him as Moyes has played Arsenal 18 times without ever beating them. West Ham will be hoping to break both of those streaks next year.
