Chile vs Paraguay build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Chile are two-time Copa America winners, claiming the trophy in 2015 and 2016, and they have started their quest for number three reasonably well. They remain unbeaten after three games, drawing with Argentina and Uruguay either side of a victory over Bolivia. As a result, they have already secured their spot in the quarter-finals with a game to spare. However, Chile will be looking to end the group campaign on a high to get the best possible draw in the next round.

Unlike Chile, Paraguay still have two games left to play in Group A, but they will still be looking to wrap up qualification with a victory on Friday. Paraguay have won one and lost one of their opening two games, beating Bolivia in their opener before losing to Argentina last time out. Victory over Chile would guarantee Paraguay finish above their opponents and put them in a good position for the next round.

  • Chile (vs Uruguay): Bravo; Medel, Maripan*, Sierralta; Isla, Aranguiz, Vidal, Pulgar*, Mena; Vargas, Brereton.
  • Paraguay (vs Argentina): Silva; Espinola, Gomez, Junior Alonso, Arzamendia; Cubas, Piris da Motta; Romero, Kaku, Almiron; Avalos.

Guillermo Maripan and Erick Pulgar have been ruled out for Chile after coming off against Uruguay with injuries, but Paraguay have no fresh concerns.

Player to watch: Ben Brereton (Chile)

One of the stories of the 2021 Copa America has been Ben Brereton and his role in the Chile team. The Blackburn Rovers forward was born in Stoke and was part of the England squad that won the U19 European Championships in 2017, scoring three times.

But Brereton is eligible to represent Chile through his mother and earned his first call up for World Cup qualifiers in June, remaining with the squad for Copa America. His debut for Chile arrived in the continental tournament, as Brereton came off the bench against Argentina, before starting in the next two games.

Those two starts for Brereton have brought one goal and one assist as the Blackburn man has quickly become a focal point of the Chile attack. Brereton scored the only goal in Chile’s 1-0 win over Bolivia and then set up strike partner Eduardo Vargas in the 1-1 draw with Uruguay. If he can get involved again, Chile may end the group stage with a second win.
