Chelsea vs Juventus build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Chelsea’s defence of their Champions League crown has got off to a pretty solid start with Thomas Tuchel’s men winning three of their opening four group games so far and almost a certainty to qualify for the last-16. They are in a good position in the Premier League too, currently sitting three points clear at the top of the Premier League, unbeaten in their past six matches — including a comfortable 3-0 victory over Leicester City at the weekend.
Juventus, however, have been even better than Chelsea in the Champions League, still perfect after four matches having beat the Blues 1-0 at the Allianz Stadium back in September. Things haven’t been going so well for Juventus in the league, with the Bianconeri currently down in eighth having lost four of their opening 13 games, but they have recently ended a two-match losing streak by winning two in a row.
- Chelsea (vs Leicester): Mendy; Chalobah, Rudiger, Silva; James, Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell; Mount, Hudson-Odoi; Havertz.
- Juventus (vs Lazio): Szczesny; Danilo*, De Ligt, Bonucci; Cuadrado, McKennie, Rabiot, Locatelli, Pellegrini; Chiesa, Morata.
Chelsea remain without Mateo Kovacic and Romelu Lukaku is not 100% fit so any involvement would come from the bench. Kai Havertz is also a doubt with a hamstring injury sustained at the weekend.
Juventus, meanwhile, are still missing the likes of Giorgio Chiellini, Federico Bernardeschi, Mattia De Sciglio and Aaron Ramsey with Paulo Dybala a doubt. Danilo has been ruled out for eight weeks after the injury he suffered at the weekend.
Chelsea vs Juventus: Champions League last-16 permutations
- Chelsea only need one point to secure their spot in the last-16 of the Champions League.
- If the Blues win by two goals, they will top Group H as long as they match Juventus’ result in the final matchday.
- A win by one goal would see Chelsea relying on goal difference to top Group H if they are level on points Juventus – and they would need to beat Zenit by more goals than Juventus beat Malmo (as they would be tied on goal difference), or score more goals in a draw/ defeat to finish top on goals scored.
- Juventus have already confirmed their spot in the last-16.
- The Bianconeri only need a point to secure top spot.
Thomas Tuchel hopeful for Antonio Rudiger new deal
When Chelsea defenders are spoken about this season it’s often Ben Chilwell and Reece James who receive the plaudits for their attacking exploits. But special mention should also go to the members of their back three, a back three that has conceded just four goals in the Premier League and eight in 19 across all competitions.
However, one problem for Chelsea comes from that back three, as Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger are all out of contract come the end of the season. All four are so important for Chelsea’s defence, with Azpilicueta and Silva providing the experience, Christensen being the future and Rudiger the now.
Against Leicester at the weekend, Rudiger got himself on the scoresheet and Rio Ferdinand has previously dubbed him as the best defender in the Premier League. And Tuchel is hopeful Rudiger will sign a new contract at Chelsea, feeling the love the club and fans have for him.
“It was a very strong performance again from Toni,” Tuchel told Chelsea’s official website.
“It does not affect this mentality, it does not affect his quality and it does absolutely not affect his behaviour. He is fully committed to Chelsea right now.
“I am absolutely sure he feels the trust and respect and the love from the club and from the spectators. He is a big competitor and he is in exactly the right spot. He is in the most competitive league, he is at a club where he really matters and that suits him perfectly, so let’s be patient and hopefully, we have a good ending.”
