Chelsea will be hoping they can stay in control of the Premier League’s top four race when they host Fulham in a west London derby on Saturday at 5:30pm (UK time).
The Blues hold a three-point lead over fifth-placed West Ham with five games left to play thanks to their 1-0 win against the Hammers last weekend, continuing their good record under Thomas Tuchel. Things aren’t as good for their neighbours, however, with Fulham seven points behind Brighton and winless in their past five Premier League matches.

Will Timo Werner be given a chance?
Chelsea carried the momentum of their win over West Ham to the Champions League in midweek, where they drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final. Christian Pulisic scored a precious away goal in Madrid to put Chelsea in slight control of the tie, though the Blues will have been ruing missed opportunities to extend their lead before Karim Benzema’s equaliser.
One of those opportunities actually came before Pulisic’s opener, with the American getting his head only a ball in the box, knocking it across goal for Timo Werner who only had Thibaut Courtois to beat from very close range. It was a strike many expected Werner to put away but his shot was well saved by Courtois and became the latest poor miss for the German in his brief Chelsea career so far.
Even during his best spells at RB Leipzig, Werner would still miss a high number of Big Chances, with only Robert Lewandowski missing more in the Bundesliga last season, but the German accompanied those misses with goals – 28 to be exact. However, that hasn’t really been the case this season. In the Premier League so far, Werner has missed 17 Big Chances (only Patrick Bamford has missed more), but he has also only managed to score six goals, compared to Bamford’s 14.
Werner’s subpar performance in midweek may mean he doesn’t start in the return leg against Real Madrid, which could lead to another chance against Fulham this weekend. And although Tuchel was visibly frustrated with Werner’s early miss in midweek, he remains behind his striker and hopes the confidence comes.
Tuchel told reporters: “Are we happy when he misses his chances? No. Is it about quality? No. It is about confidence and momentum, about trusting his instincts more and not overthinking it.
“It is easier said than done. I never scored a goal in my whole career and if I did, it was like birthday and Christmas at the same time.
“It is easier said than done but I don’t want to also make the problem bigger than it is. It is what it is, he has to go through it, that’s his life. He can be very happy about it and fight his way through. This is the point and he is doing this.”
It’s worth remembering that Werner did also score the winning goal against West Ham last weekend, putting Chelsea in pole position for the top four, and is the Blues’ joint-top scorer in the Premier League this season.
