Chelsea and Southampton will both be looking to continue their EFL Cup runs when they meet in the fourth round at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday at 7:45pm (UK time).
The Blues have already seen off Premier League opposition, beating Aston Villa 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the third round. Southampton also needed penalties to reach the fourth round, beating Sheffield United 4-2 following a 2-2 draw – though their second-round win was a lot easier, thrashing Newport County 8-0.

Chelsea vs Southampton previous line-ups and team news:
- Chelsea (vs Norwich City): Mendy; Chalobah, Rudiger, Silva; James, Jorginho, Kovacic, Chilwell; Mount, Hudson-Odoi; Havertz.
- Southampton (vs Burnley): McCarthy; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Perraud; Walcott, Diallo, Romeu, Elyounoussi*; Redmond, Broja*.
Chelsea have no fresh concerns and will expect N’Golo Kante to be back after he missed the weekend’s game through injury, but they will be without Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. Southampton, meanwhile, will be missing Chelsea loanee Armando Broja and Mohamed Elyounoussi.
Player to watch: Kai Havertz (Chelsea)
Chelsea were excellent in their 7-0 win over Norwich City at the weekend, with five goals coming from their academy graduates (and the others via Ben Chilwell and an own goal). Mason Mount got the hat-trick, while Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi also got themselves on the scoresheet.
For Mount and Hudson-Odoi the game brought their first goals of the season in a game where the pressure was high, due to Chelsea being without Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner through injury. But while they thrived, their attacking partner Kai Havertz looked lost.
Havertz was the False No.9 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and the man many had tipped to lead the Blues to glory after scoring in Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Malmo last week. Instead, the German was overshadowed by the Chelsea academy graduates before being taken off without a goal or assist after 70 minutes.
In his 70 minutes on the pitch, Havertz managed two shots and one on target, the same number as Ross Barkley who played just 20 minutes and fewer than Hakim Ziyech who replaced him. He was the only outfield Chelsea player not to create a chance at Stamford Bridge and had just 43 touches – with only Hudson-Odoi and Edouard Mendy having fewer among the Blues’ starters.
Havertz had his struggles last season but was given leeway due to outside circumstances, being new to the league, joining at a strange time and suffering from health issues. They were also largely forgotten because Havertz was the man to score the Champions League-winning goal against Manchester City back in May.
But Thomas Tuchel has insisted that Havertz, and Werner, must now fight for their places with their adjustment time over.
“We have now set the bar pretty high for our own expectations,” he told BILD of the German pair.
“For Kai and Timo this means: The adjustment phase is complete. They earned their spurs, played their part in a great success.
“And now it’s about moving on – and that’s what they are doing. I am very satisfied with both of them.”
With Lukaku and Werner both still injured, Havertz could start against Southampton even if Tuchel opts to rotate. This will be his chance to get amongst the goals again, showing the Norwich performance was merely a dip and proving he can be the man to rely on.
