Chelsea vs Sheffield United preview, predictions & possible XIs

Chelsea will be hoping to get their first home win under Frank Lampard on Saturday when they welcome Sheffield United to west London.

The Blues have not had the greatest of starts under club legend Lampard, failing to win their opening three games across all competitions including a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge against Leicester City.

But last weekend saw them finally get off the mark in an exciting 3-2 win over Norwich City thanks to goals from Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, lifting them to four points.

Also on four points are Saturday’s opponents Sheffield United, who were handed their first defeat of the new season at the weekend by Leicester City.

The Blades will certainly be happy with their start to life back in the Premier League, drawing with Bournemouth and beating Crystal Palace in their opening two games.

Now, Chris Wilder will be hoping to claim a big scalp before the international break, to put the Premier League on notice. But, can they do it?

Read on for our predictions, key players, TV info and team news ahead of Chelsea vs Sheffield United.

Ones to watch

Chelsea: Emerson Palmieri

Despite Chelsea’s stuttering start, the new season has brought the positive form of Emerson Palmieri. The Italy international has made the left-back spot his own after struggling to overthrow Marcos Alonso under Maurizio Sarri. And Chelsea are benefitting.

Emerson has been a key player for Lampard so far, striking an impressive balance between defence and attack. The 25-year-old has created six chances for Chelsea in the Premier League, and is also yet to be dribbled past by an opposition player.

Key stat: Emerson (15) has made more tackles than any other Chelsea player in the Premier League this season.

Sheffield United: Oliver Norwood

Sheffield United can be proud of their Premier League return, scoring three goals in their opening three games, when not many may have given them a chance. Key to that has been Oliver Norwood who, despite having yet to record an assist, has created an impressive eight chances so far – five more than any other Sheffield United player.

Key stat: Only Enda Stevens (12) has made more tackles than Oliver Norwood (6) among Sheffield United players in the Premier League this season.

Team news

Chelsea are waiting to hear whether Pedro and N’Golo Kante will be fit to feature on Saturday after both missed the weekend’s win over Norwich City. Mason Mount is also a slight doubt after picking up a knock at Carrow Road, but could still start.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Arrizabalaga; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson; Jorginho, Kovacic; Barkley, Mount, Pulisic; Abraham.

Sheffield United

Wilder will be without Kean Bryan but has an otherwise full squad to choose from, with John Fleck back in contention following a thigh injury.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood, Freeman, Stevens; McGoldrick, Robinson.

Squawka Prediction

At the start of the season, Chelsea fans will have been looking forward to facing Sheffield United so early, but the Blades will be no pushovers. Wilder’s men have proven themselves a tricky side to break down and with Chelsea’s problems, the Blues will be made to suffer – though they should just about edge the match.

Chelsea 2-1 Sheffield United
