Things are changing at Chelsea this summer – as has become an annual occurrence during Roman Abramovich’s reign.
Maurizio Sarri has joined Juventus, Eden Hazard has completed a big-money move to Real Madrid and club legend Frank Lampard is the new man charged with providing a sense of calm amid the usual chaos at Stamford Bridge.
However, that is going to be far from straightforward given that the west Londoners have a transfer ban to contend with and are set to be unable to bring in new faces.
With the 2019/20 season now just weeks away, the Blues don’t have long to get their house in order.
Mateo Kovačić has completed a permanent move to Chelsea, despite the transfer ban, while Christian Pulisic will arrive from Borussia Dortmund having agreed a deal back in January.
Beyond that, Lampard will likely need to work with what he has got. Of course, Chelsea have a wealth of talent in their youth system and sent a small army out on loan last season.
Tammy Abraham is one of several players to voice their excitement at finally being given an opportunity to play regularly but is the striker good enough to carry the weight of a top-four challenge on his shoulders? It’s a big call.
And what of Lampard himself? Is he really ready to take the reins at Stamford Bridge? Or is it too soon to throw the 41-year-old into the deep end?
