Charlton vs Millwall Betting Tips

Charlton Athletic have become the team to back for Under 2.5 goals in the Championship of late – not that their fans will mind. The Addicks have kept three consecutive clean sheets since the return of the English second tier and picked up seven points from an available nine to rise up to 18th place and open up a four point gap between themselves and the relegation zone. Indeed, Under 2.5 goals have now been scored in five of the last six league fixtures involving Lee Bowyer’s men, so it’s no surprise that we anticipate a similarly low-scoring affair in their London derby with Millwall on Friday evening.

The Lions’ play-off chase has lost some momentum in the second half of the season and they make the short trip to the Valley having won just one of their last six in the league. Gary Rowett’s side have played out 0-0 and 1-1 draws in their last two games against Barnsley and Swansea City respectively and indeed they’re also a team that have been involved in low-scoring games of late, with nine of their last 11 in the league seeing under 2.5 goals bets come in.

Derby vs Nottingham Forest Betting Tips

It’s derby day in the East Midlands on Saturday as Derby County and Nottingham Forest go head-to-head. There’s more on the line in this match too, as both sides look to secure a spot in the play-offs with the Rams sitting one place outside the top six and the Reds sitting much more comfortably in fourth place after back-to-back home wins against Bristol City and Huddersfield Town in the last week. Derby however are in even stronger form than their neighbours and come into this game on the back of five consecutive victories.

The key man in this upturn in form has been former Manchester United superstar Wayne Rooney, as he looks to replicate his achievements at DC United last season by leading a mid-table club to a play-off position. The 34 year old has found the net in his last two games to take his tally for the Rams to five goals. If ever there was a man for the big occasion, then Rooney was it and we fancy him to get on the scoresheet for a third consecutive game here.

Blackburn vs Leeds Betting Tips

Blackburn’s outside hopes of reaching the play-offs have taken a real hit since the return of the Championship season. The Lancashire side have lost two of their last three games, meaning they’ve now won just one of their last seven, with five points now separating them from the coveted top six. What’s more, three of their last four games have resulted in defeats by a margin of more than one goal for the Rovers and to make matters worse, they now welcome the league leaders to Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon.

Leeds United are edging closer to a long-awaited promotion back to the Premier League and they earned a huge three points last weekend by winning 3-0 against one of their closest rivals for a top two spot in Fulham. In fact, Marcelo Bielsa’s men have been truly dominant in many of their games this season, winning with a one goal handicap on 11 occasions in the league. As such, we can see them winning by more than one goal again here against an out-of-sorts Blackburn defence.

Brentford vs Wigan Betting Tips

The two form teams in the Championship go head-to-head this weekend, with both teams making excellent progress towards their very different goals with recent results. Brentford are now within five points of the automatic promotion spots, having won their last four consecutive games without conceding a goal, whilst Wigan have now gone nine games unbeaten to rise above the relegation zone and open up an eight point gap above the bottom three.

Even more impressively, the Latics have now kept seven consecutive clean sheets in the league, but with news of the club’s administration breaking on Wednesday, that form will have to continue if they can be sure of remaining in the Championship for next season. Both teams are dangerous going forward, but we can’t ignore those long runs that both sides have enjoyed without conceding a goal, so 4/5 looks like a very tempting price for recommended bet of No on Both Teams To Score at Griffin Park.

Bristol City vs Cardiff Betting Tips

Bristol City and Cardiff City have exchanged placed in the Championship table this season. The Robins had looked like play-off contenders throughout the campaign, but they’ve since slipped down to mid-table on the back of an eight-game winless streak and following defeat to Nottingham Forest in midweek, they’ve now failed to pick up a single point since the Championship returned from it’s temporary suspension a few weeks ago. As such, Lee Johnson will be hoping for a Severnside Derby win as pressure surely starts to build on the relatively long-serving boss.

Unfortunately for him, we envisage another defeat here. Whilst Bristol City have slipped from the play-offs to mid-table, Cardiff City have risen rapidly and following a mid-week draw with Charlton Athletic, they now sit in the sixth and final play-off spot in the table having lost just two of their last 14 games. Neil Harris’ men are playing with real confidence and having taken so long to chase down the play-off spots, they’ll do all they can to remain there in the rest of the campaign.

Fulham vs Birmingham Betting Tips

Fulham got their promotion push back on track in midweek with a West London Derby victory over neighbours Queens Park Rangers. However, the Cottagers did have to come from behind having conceded to the Hoops in the first minute of that match they were also behind in the first 10 minutes last week, going on to lose a vital promotion six-pointer to league leaders Leeds United at Elland Road after Patrick Bamford put the Whites ahead in the early stages.

This weekend, they take on a Birmingham City outfit who have also conceded early goals in their last two games. Although the Blues were able to earn a draw from their home clash with Hull City despite conceding in both the 2nd and 16th minute, they were trounced 0-3 by another relegation-threatened outfit in Huddersfield Town in midweek with the Terriers having opened the scoring in the 10th minute. With so many early goals in recent matches involving these sides, we’re backing another goal in the first ten minutes on the banks of the Thames this Saturday.

Huddersfield vs Preston Betting Tips

It’s a battle of the roses at the Galpharm Stadium this weekend as Lancashire’s Preston North End make the short trip across the pennines to West Yorkshire to take on Huddersfield Town. A quick glance at the league table suggests that the Lilywhites should be favourites for three points here, but Alex Neil’s men are in dreadful form, with their Wednesday night defeat at home to Derby County meaning they’ve now picked up just one point from the last possible 18 in the Championship and slipped well behind in the race for a play-off spot.

With confidence clearly low along this PNE squad, they now face a Huddersfield side who enjoyed a morale-boosting 0-3 victory at Birmingham City in midweek. That victory opened up a three point gap from the relegation zone for the Terriers and their performance was more reminiscent of the ones produced in pivotal victories over Bristol City and Charlton Athletic just before the season was suspended. With the nominal home advantage and with momentum on their side, 8/5 looks like a decent price on Danny Cowley’s men as they look to extend that gap between themselves and bottom three yet further this weekend.

Luton vs Reading Betting Tips

Luton Town have now gone six games without tasting defeat in the Championship, but they’ve still sunk back to the bottom spot in the table. The fight for survival has certainly grown narrower, with just two points separating the Hatters from 21st placed Hull City, but they need to start turning more draws into victories. The Bedfordshire outfit have actually drawn the joint-lowest amount of games in the Championship this season with just seven but remarkably, four of those ties have come in their last five league fixtures.

The visitors to Kennilworth Road on Saturday are a Reading outfit with a relatively comfortable seven point gap between themselves and the drop zone. However, the Royals are winless in their last three league games, drawing one of those matches against relegation-threatened opposition in the shape of Stoke City and we can see another share of the spoils for the Hatters here at home against slightly stronger opposition. The draw is available at 23/10 with Sky Bet, which looks like a fine price considering the four draws that have come in Luton’s last five fixtures.

Stoke vs Barnsley Betting Tips

With the amount of teams that are under the threat of demotion to League One in the Championship, matches between teams in the lower reaches of the division are taking on huge importance at the moment. As things stand, Barnsley are in 23rd place, but just two points separate them and Stoke City in 20th who they face this weekend. Unfortunately for the Potters, we sense more danger for them this weekend as the Tykes head to Staffordshire in better form than their relegation rivals.

Barnsley have returned to action with three consecutive clean sheets against Blackburn, Millwall and QPR meaning that the South Yorkshire side have actually now kept the opposition from scoring six times in their last eight games. Given that Stoke have scored just once in their three games since lockdown ended and have lost their last two matches against Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic without scoring a goal, we can see another clean sheet for the Tykes in-form young keeper Jack Walton here.

Swansea vs Sheffield Wednesday Betting Tips

Sheffield Wednesday’s faltering play-off push had seemed to have been given a jolt of hope with a 1-2 win over Bristol City last weekend, but the Owls slumped to a 0-3 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday night and as such, we think their season is all but over now. Another play-off contender is Swansea City, who are five points clear of Wednesday and just two places away from the play-offs and given the stuttering form of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Millwall and Preston North End, they’ll feel they still have a chance of sneaking into the top six this season.

The Swans are in the better form of these two sides having lost only once in their last five games and they have the nominal home advantage at the Liberty Stadium this weekend. Garry Monk’s men have nothing to play for now, whereas the hosts here will feel with three important points in this game, they can really pile the pressure on their arch-rivals Cardiff City in that coveted sixth spot so we think the motivation and momentum is with them ahead of this clash.

Middlesbrough vs QPR Betting Tips

We’re backing another home win on Sunday afternoon too as Middlesbrough welcome Queens Park Rangers to the Riverside Stadium. Although at the time of writing the Boro are still yet to play Hull City in a huge relegation six-pointer, they picked up a vital win at Stoke City last weekend in Neil Warnock’s first game in charge and we think that the Teesiders have made a wise decision in hiring the Championship’s most successful and experienced manager who takes on one of his litany of former clubs in the shape of QPR this weekend.

The Hoops are currently occupying a lower mid-table spot and a lack of motivation with no real threat of relegation hanging over them has been obvious since the return from lockdown. Mark Warburton’s charges have lost three consecutive fixtures against Barnsley, Charlton Athletic and Fulham and on this long trip to the North East, we envisage another defeat against a Boro outfit looking to gain some momentum and rise away from the bottom three in these final weeks of the campaign.

West Brom vs Hull Betting Tips

It’s tough to call how this fixture will go as we write now ahead of Hull City’s huge clash with Middlesbrough on Sunday night. However, it’s fair to say that regardless of the result in that fixture, West Bromwich Albion will expect to beat the Humbersiders at the Hawthorns this weekend and after he finally returned to the scoresheet in midweek, one man we have our eye on in this fixture is Baggies forward Charlie Austin.

The experienced frontman has struggled for form in the second half of the campaign, but as we reach the closing stages Austin will have to step up to the fore and find his goalscoring boots again after a strong spell of form in front of goal earlier in the season. The ex-Burnley man scored his first goal in eight games in the midweek win over Sheffield Wednesday, but that strike was still his 10th of the season in all competitions, showing he still has the goalscoring touch. We fancy him to add to that tally against the Championship’s second-worst defence on Sunday.

Championship FAQ’s

Who are Championship favourites?

Leeds currently lead the way in the race for the Championship title and there’s a general consensus that between them, the Whites and West Bromwich Albion have tied up the two promotion places – although Fulham and Brentford are not quite out of reach just yet. As things stand, Marcelo Bielsa’s men sit on point clear of the Baggies at the top of the table.

What channel is the Championship on?

The good news for supporters of Championship clubs is that every game will be available for broadcast. It hasn’t yet been confirmed how many games will be broadcast on each platform, but plans have been announced to show every game in some capacity for supporters in the UK and abroad.

Sky Sports are currently in the middle of a long-term deal to show Football League fixtures, so many of the games will undoubtedly be shown there – but games are also likely to be available for all fans through club’s individual iFollow platforms, which currently allows fans to watch games from abroad.

When will the Championship return?

The Championship has followed in the wake of the Premier League by earmarking mid-June as the date for a return to action. Whilst the top tier will get underway on June 17th, the second tier will get underway the following weekend on the 20th. Games that could be set to take place that weekend include a pivotal West London derby between Fulham and Brentford plus a tough trip to Cardiff City for league leaders Leeds United.

How do you get promoted from the Championship?

The top two teams are automatically promoted from the Championship, the second tier of the English football pyramid, into the Premier League. There’s then a play-off between the teams that finish between 3rd and 6th in that division to determine who takes the final promotion spot.

How is relegation settled in the Championship?

Relegation is simple from the Championship – finish in the bottom three positions in the table and you are relegated into League One. The relegation battle this season is particularly interesting, with only seven points separating the teams from 17th down to 23rd. Charlton Athletic, Luton Town and Barnsley are the three teams currently occupying the bottom three.

When do we post our Championship tips & predictions?

We aim to post our Championship tips and predictions around 48 hours before kickoff, allowing punters time to weigh up their options. Time periods can change depending on fixture congestion.

For particularly eye-catching fixtures, there may be an array of different betting guides and pointers around the site, so keep your eyes peeled for a special Squawka slant on your betting content ahead of the biggest games on the calendar.

What’s the history of the Championship

The English Football League added a second division way back in 1892, just four years after the first league campaign was played. Originally called Division Two, it became Division One in 1992 upon the formation of the Premier League, before being renamed ‘The Championship’ during the EFL’s rebranding in 2004.

The most successful teams in the history of the second tier include two recent Premier League winners, with Manchester City and Leicester City both having won the second tier with seven titles each.

With an average attendance of over 20,000 supporters a game, the Championship is the best attended second tier in the world – and the ninth richest division in world football.
