Championship 2023/24 Golden Boot odds, predictions & tips

The 2023/24 Championship season is underway and the race for the Golden Boot begins.
The race for the Golden Boot, awarded to the EFL Championship’s top scorer, is always a fascinating and unpredictable battle. Last season, Chuba Akpom emerged as the top scorer, a surprise for many bookmakers who had not even priced him in the top scorer market at the start of the season.
This unpredictability makes it difficult to be supremely confident in any top scorer odds, but there are some intriguing angles to consider.
Since 2020, only 25% of players who scored 10 or more goals in the Championship were new signings that season. The majority of top scorers tend to be players who have already been with their respective clubs for some time, showcasing the importance of familiarity and understanding with the team’s style of play.
Another interesting trend to consider is that the top scorers often play for clubs that perform well in the league. Since 2013/14, no player has won the Golden Boot from a club that finished outside the top six. This suggests that the top scorers often play crucial roles in their team’s success and are the focal point of their team’s attacking efforts.
Additionally, age plays a significant role in the Golden Boot race. The top scorers in recent years have generally been in their prime years, with few players in their 30s or under 23 years old achieving the feat. Striking the right balance between experience and youth is crucial for players aiming to secure the top scorer title.
Considering these factors, several players stand out as potential candidates for the Golden Boot in the 2023/24 season, outside of the favourites.
Adam Armstrong
Armstrong only managed a couple of goals in the Premier League last season as Southampton were relegated, but his record in the second tier is excellent. The last time he played at this level back in 2020/21, the former Newcastle striker scored 28 goals in 40 appearances for Blackburn Rovers, having already netted 16 times the previous campaign. Already this term, Armstrong sits on four goals and with the Saints expected to be among the top promotion contenders, that total should fly up.
Che Adams
Sitting one goal behind Armstrong is teammate, Che Adams. Plenty of Premier League were linked with Adams in the summer but as long as he stays where he is for the campaign, he’ll push hard for the Golden Boot. The last time he played at this level, Adams scored 22 goals in 46 appearances, so the pedigree is there. Saints really do have frightening firepower.
Jamie Vardy
He’s yet to get off the mark this season, but surely Jamie Vardy will be eyeing up the Championship Golden Boot. Vardy’s exploits in the Premier League are legendary and although age has seen him lose a yard of pace, he’s still a nightmare for defenders to mark, while he knows exactly where the goal is. Let’s see what happens.
